to her son. A peron walked over to him and threatened him, and she believes that he is a gang member. And she being a protective mom threatened her and now she is in fear that the person will hurt her. What can I do that says I care and I am her to talk if she needs a friendly ear? I would like to buy her a small inexpenisive gift as I am a single mom too and cannot afford much!

You answered your own question. You can be there for her when she needs someone. Simply tell her that you care and are there if and when she needs to talk. I have used this for my friends both male and female along with my wife and son. They both know that when they need to talk that I am there. I have a classmate from high school that I correspond with off and on and we talk to each other anytime we feel down or need to talk. I talk to her about things I can' talk to my wife about which is rare.
As to a small gift, if possible why don't you try to find a small inexpensive piece of jewelry such as a pendant and give it to her. There are many types of jewelry that can be given as a sign of friendship, however as I stated above the best gift you can give is that of your friendship and time. I know what it is like being a single parent. My wife was in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm for 9 months while I was still on Active Duty. I was responsible for my young son, luckily I was on shore duty and also had a FANTASTIC sitter who was there when I needed someone to talk to or to watch my son.
Just be there for the individual and you can give the most precious inexpensive gift you can give.

Good Luck to both of you.

Take her out to eat.

Fix dinner for her.

Clean her apartment or house.

3 or 4 pieces of fruit in a bowl is always nice to get.
Nothing is better than ice cream.

She should call the cops. Offer her your home if she is that fearful. You may not have that much room, but you can at least offer her the couch or a blow up bed.
