My car just passed an emissions test a few days ago but today I heard a loud knocking sound when I started my car. I checked the oil level and it was fine. The only fluid that was low was the trans fluid. Everyone I talked to in the past also talked about how great my motor sounds. What could it be? Is it my engine? If is how much will the parts or part cost? I have a 1994 Oldmobile Delta 88 Royale. Thanks in advance

Has the car sat for more than a few days without being driven? The oil may have drained off the top of the cylinders, resulting in a knock. Did the sound stop after just a few seconds? If you hear it again, talk to your mechanic about checking both the oil pump and doing a compression check. Neither one are very expensive now, but if you do have a serious problem (like a failing oil pump), the consequences of ignoring it could ruin your engine. There's no way of knowing what causes a knock like this. Perhaps the emissions place de-tuned your engine to get it to pass? (I've had them do this to me) If so, all you may need is a tune-up. Again, there is no way of telling unless you take the car to a good diagnostic mechanic.

My guess is that it stops after running a minute or so if true that is just the time it takes to get the oil circulated. Could be some holes are slightly clogged or some sludge in the engine. Get and oild change with a detergent cleaning oil run the car about 2000 miles then get oil and filter changed again. Should clear it up.

That is the sound of COLD and DRY (unlibricated) parts clashing. Warm up the car till the oil starts to circulate. If the sound never disappears by idling, then take it to a mechanic. you are in serious trouble. Good Luck...

Don't worry about it, Unless you have extra cash..

Since it knocking and you take it to a mechanic you can expect to pay BIG bucks..

Just keep on top of the fluid level and hope that the sound goes away. Or reach for plastic (VISA)

Just play the radio louder. Use heavy grade oil for that boot 20/40. Or other additive to thicken the oil...

If it's a rod or valve that would be a major problem, you'd have to remove the engine, tear it down and rebuilt it. The cost for that type of work or for even buying a new rebuilt engine is probably more than the car is worth. Good luck.

Some guy is probably stuck in your truck. When you start the car, he tries get your attention. Let him out and the knocking should stop...or try a tune-up and higher grade of gasoline.
