A person can be very pure of heart, but its next to impossible in todays world for that person to not be taken advantage of. It's so sad to say, i know. Eventually that person will succumb to societies evil...as you put it....and will have to become hard. Its just that way of the world these days.

As the general consensus seems to be here, it is a choice to be taken advantage of. I do my best to help everyone I can and be a great contributor. Having said that, I try to help most people to help themselves while at the same time giving them the message that it is in their best interest to be like minded and be good people themselves. Therefore, most people I come in contact with will usually be good people also because they have seen first hand the benefits of doing so and this naturally leads them away from taking advantage of me or anyone I am close to.

Of course, I have had people attempt to take advantage of me due to my own good nature. I have, for the most part, been able to neutralise this. The reason being that just because you have a good nature and are a good person, it doesn't mean you have to put up with those who have sinister motives. It is playing the victim role that I believe is the cause of people to be taken advantage of. If you have a mentality that presupposes you will be taken advantage of then you probably will because you give a vibe that tells people you will allow it and that it's ok.

Yes, people can accept the purity of someone's good nature, at least eventually they can. Everyone from murderers to rapists eventually feel a level of remorse or guilt, even if it's not till right before death. This fact means that people eventually get a feelling of "oh that isn't right, I'll be more caring next time", even if they don't seem the type.

No, I don't believe that a good hearted person succumbs to societies evils, as long as they are truthful in their good heartedness. You cannot change the innermost nature of a person, if they are good hearted then even if they commit certain acts against this identity, they will always come back to who they are. I know I mentioned that bad people feel guilt and eventually gain remorse, but that's because they are actually good at heart on some level, everyone is. No one is truly evil, at least not many.

So in summary, I would have to say....Don't give up being a good natured person just because you are taken advantage of because your good heart is most certainly not the cause. The cause is most likely an attitude of active expectancy that you will become a victim. Change your state of mind and your belief about what it means to be good and you will welcome all things good to you.

This advice is for anyone and everyone, I'm not just directing this towards Rena because I am guessing it might be just a general question, not a personal one.

Regards,

Chris Lyons.

I don't think you talking about good and ignorant. Good and smart go better together. As we are still mostly children dependent on each other, a good person should be independent and even interdependent and be far enough along as to be an example and not a victim. A little good is a dangerous thing. A adult is supposed to control a child, not vice versa, but that takes wisdom, not just virtue or it's a virtue to be wise. Virtue has it's Latin root in true or truth. And with all your knowledge "add wised om". You can only recommend a source a limited amount of times a day, but I think the one below is pretty good and the best on it is free as usual on all these sites. "Less is more" or at least better usually.

I think that people that are extremely good hearted and do things because it's the right thing to do get taken advantage of. But while a lot of people take advantage of them, a lot of people are drawn to them because of their good nature. And in my opinion, good hearted people get the most important thing and that is friends and loved ones that appreciate and trust them. While the people that take advantage of them are usually surrounded by people that are the same type of people. And I believe that the people in our lives are more important than anything else.

I think that everyone succumbs to things that even they believe are wrong at times, but the important thing is that person recognizes what they did was wrong and change their behaviour and learn from it. At the end of the day we have to be able to live with our actions and I know that when I do what I feel is right, I am much more content with myself.

To be "good" doesn't imply stupidity. The idea that "purity", goodness, innocence, generosity, and the rest are somehow unavoidably and necessarily linked to wide-eyed gullibility is a curious artifact of common culture. Perhaps it's linked to religion, and images of the lamb, etc? It's ridiculous. Being and doing "good" requires insight, at least some wisdom, and courage. So it will not succumb nor submit to evil, but will contest it - on one's own behalf and on others'. Being "good hearted" doesn't mean one has to be a sucker, either. Sometimes real kindness requires firmness - and even ruthlessness. The "good" are not weak. They are strong. The "good" can empathise, without losing their own identity - that's what makes them useful.

Just because a person is good does not imply they are stupid or gullible. Rather to the contrary. A good person must have an understanding of the other side of life as well as the goodness within them.

I personally do not believe a person is either good or evil, at least not in their own minds. No rational person does arm for the sake of doing harm. Only the mentally ill do that and they are in need of help while deserving our sympathy.

You truly can't mix the 'good' hearted people with complacency. In truth, being of good heart doesn't make you an easy target. It's a 'choice' a person makes. So, to succumb isn't really an aspect of a good heart, but more of a vulnerable one.

Some people have an imaginary picture of themselves which is that that they are a good person. In reality it might be for example that their religious beliefs are actually what is behind it all. Really, they might have plenty of negative emotions or other contradictory beliefs festering and providing resistance. Being ^good^ in such a way is the road to plenty of illnesses and suffering. It would actually be worse if a person believed that being taken advantage of is harmful to them and having fear that it will lead them to some harm.

Those who are emotionally and spiritually more evolved (and NO I am NOT talking about the faithful and/or the religious fanatics) ALWAYS pay the heaviest price. ... But then again, they are also authentic and enlightened enough to recognize that they walk a different path of life altogether. ... Malice and suffering are NOT the necessary components of an enlightened journey, yet more often than not they are the inevitable tax that transcending Ignorance exacts. … Focus on The Relevant; be courageous enough to adhere to the heartfelt way of your being, and NOT necessarily the way of the world - the rest, as they say, is JUST the rest; and will eventually be dissolved in Time.
