I like Bono and I love his music.
He can get irritating from time to time, but B is a thoroughly decent bloke, in my opinion. He's done a hell of a lot to raise awareness of many causes, and has provided an enormous amount of time and money to help those less fortunate. While simultaneously making some great music, keeping a 22 year marriage going, and raising a family. I'd rather have one of him than any amount of our modern day pop morons.
He fully admits that he's a megalomaniac. That said, he wanders around everywhere without minders, which is very rare in the music business, especially for someone as famous as Bono. As for all the posing - half the time he's messing around and taking the p*ss out of himself, a quarter of the time misquoted, and as he's such a caring soul, the rest is excused. I reckon under all that bravado and noise he's probably insecure as hell.
If he sat down quietly and didn't bother fundraising and campaigning, people would be whining that he didn't care. Whether one likes the man or not, it would be blind and silly to deny that he's clearly a compassionate man who cares deeply about poverty.
EDIT: Oh good grief. He donates plenty to charity that he doesn't shout about. Even if he DID give all his money away, it wouldn't solve the enormous problem of poverty. Get real.

I'm crazy about the guy and have been since I was 15.
Bono is one of the rare examples of a guy who puts his money, time, effort and heart where his mouth is. Celebrities being charitable is about as common these days as young starlets getting arrested for DUI. It's posh, it's stylish and it's a good way for someone in the public eye to come across as "regular people."
Bono has never tried to be "regular people" and he has never been part of his many charitable causes for style and/or popularity. Bono has been doing this since before it was cool and he'll be doing it long after he stops getting publicity for it. Bono is doing what he does because he feels it's the least he can do after being blessed with the lifestyle of a celebrity.
And I get a little sick of hearing people say, "Why doesn't Bono shut up and donate all of his millions to Africa?" Well, because it wouldn't scratch the surface. The problems that Bono is attempting to solve don't come with price tags. They come with a need for a change of heart in all of us.
Okay, putting his charity aside, I also love his music. I grew up in a pretty strict family that seemed to be drowning in religious legalism. My parents banned rock music from the house... not because they had listened to it first hand... but because some pastor told them to. I finally made my mother realize rock music wasn't all satan and drugs and sex once I played her some of U2's music. She never knew rock music could be spiritual. Now, she's as big of a fan as I am. But more than anything, U2 introduced me to the concept that God didn't just live in church and tell people they were going to hell. I don't think I'd believe in God at all if it weren't for how U2's music moves me spiritually.
I feel people criticize Bono and make him the butt of their jokes for the very reasons I praise him. He wears his heart on his sleeve, refuses to let his age get in the way of him being the biggest rock star on the planet and he spends his spare time trying to change the world. Maybe some people find those qualities annoying. I simply find them remarkable.

Neither.
My best friend in the 80's wanted to marry him, but I didn't understand why one would want to. They were openly religious then, and I always found that courageous, but not personally appealing.
Then they seemed to discard their early earnestness and passion in favour of sheer ambition. Since that happened (late 80's), I have pretty much ignored them, and Bono.
But he doesn't offend me. I don't care enough about him to be offended or waste my energy forming a hate-on for him. The world is full of flawed people. He's one of them. That's fine. He could have much worse flaws than the ones he has.

Love him! I love that he's a humanitarian, and even though he's insanely famous, he's still best friends with the members of U2 (friends he's had since he was 15 or so) and he's still married to the same women. That takes committment and integrity, which so many famous people seem to lack. Sure, he gets on a soapbox every now and then, but I for one am glad to see someone so devoted to helping others.

I Respect Him. Family man, devoted to his wife, strong friendship in the group, always speaks his mind, allows himself to screw up and get back on course, believes what he says and says what he believes, fantastic performer, always gives 100% at concerts, loves people, cares for the poor, what more do you want?

Hate is a very strong word, but I don't like him because he thinks he is this big human rights activist, if he believes in it that much why doesn't he give all his money away? the amount he has got could save a hell of a lot of people.

I prefer him talking to singing.
Like we needed a lame version of the Clash with a lame version of Joe Strummer.
