I live in the south, in NC, and once again, a white man with a handgun, yelling racial epithets, used his car to chase a black couple in their car. When arrested, the white man had Klan materials in his car. Now a neo-Nazi group is sending flyers to the "whites" in the area, supporting the white man and blaming nonwhites for "whites becoming poorer". You'll never guess the white man's occupation: he's a retired police officer of 23 years. When did this happen? June 8, 2007. I feel so safe, don't you? This is what I live with, I can't pretend racism doesn't exist, like some people.

How active are the Klan and neo-Nazi's near where you live? Why?

In case you don't know what's going on in your backyard, check out the Southern Poverty Law Center, they monitor hate groups throughout the US: http://www.splcenter.org/index.jsp

Anglo-please tell us where you live so we can let the FBI know. With Americans like you, we need to make sure we save a federal building or two from you.

It is such a shame! I marvel at how so many people can think that racism and those types of things don't happen.

Well, in 2005 a Neo-Nazi group planned a march here in Toledo (OH). The residents (both black and white alike) were outraged that they came to our city and the neighborhood rioted. It was on the national news...100 people were arrested, we had a city-wide curfew enforced it was horrible. People were injured and a bar was burned to the ground.
The funny thing is that this Nazi group is actually from somewhere in the (backwoods - lol) hills of Virginia or something like that. They traveled all that way just to start some trouble - excuse me - to march.
Lo and behold! These same people are planning on coming here AGAIN - 8/17. The City is actually trying to control things better this time and they want the group to only pass out flyers downtown near the city building (in order to keep the group out of that certain neighborhood again).

The strange thing about it is that I really don't remember why they felt the need to come here in the first place. I think two neighbors were not getting along - one happened to be black and one happened to be white and they were here to "encourage whites to take back *their* neighborhood" or something like that.

They are losers who need to get a life, IMHO. There are some who are active, but they are not native to the area.

::EDIT:: Oh. The Klan. I haven't heard of any of their antics here in Ohio, but that's not to say that they don't exist. I lived in Southern Indiana for about 10 years...woa was that scary! Confederate flags galore, racial epitheths to beat the band. I even found a Klan newspaper stuck in a book that I borrowed from the library. It was published in Evansville, IN. That was about 10 years ago.

Yes, freedom of speech is the reason - and why make an exception? If you ban that, why not ban other stuff you don't like? You either believe in freedom of speech or you don't, and if you believe in it, you have to be willing to tolerate opinions you dislike. "Inciting racial hatred" is a pretty vague and nebulous concept and I don't think it should be criminalised. It effectively creates a thought crime, and is just a thinly disguised way of preventing the expression of certain opinions. I mean, if I publish an article criticising the British Government, I'm not "inciting hatred" against the Government, I'm just expressing an opinion. Why should it be any different for issues such as race?

I have heard of a Neo-Nazi group in Venice Beach, CA. They seem to pick fights with everyone though...including white people.

The population is soooo diverse in Los Angeles most people display minor irritation at the crowded streets and cultural frictions. Most are accepting of it. The fighting we are told about on the news is always between Latino and Black gangs. Reality may differ.

I have never heard of a Klan incident here.

I live in Southern California and there are some in the High Desert areas. We just stay away from their ignorance.
But, yes in the south, yikes!
Lived in Louisiana, dealt w/ the Rednecks w/ their confederate flags. Went to MS before Katrina and stopped to use the restroom & this Redneck looked at me, my mixed sons (who were little) then let the door shut in my face. I was soo pissed! I yelled "Nice Manners Asshole!" "You were raised real well!"
I'm sure his ignorant *** could care less.
Now,
In Southern California the White Racist is very much the minority. They hide in the desert communities, and up north. If you live in So. Cal most people are with another race, very open minded here, thank God!
Maybe you should move here??

i don't hear about them much at all where i live... (Oregon)... but i searched and there is a neo-nazi movement based out of Portland called Volksfront; and apparently an ex leader of the National Alliance used to teach at my old University before he died several years back. not much at all about the KKK in the past decade.

i'm not sure why... maybe it's because there's not many minorities here?? or there's not many big cities?

No. In the bay area we have very few poorly functioning white supremacists. The hate watch groups have had to admitt we have the opposite problem. The majority of our hate groups here have been black supremacists ie panthers and brown supremacists ie la Raza. It also pisses me off that people don't acknowledge racism or are allowed to discuss racism when the targets are white like they are in California. It also makes me mad when people whine about Katrina and all those poor blacks in the super dome and crap. Blacks were the majority of the population but there were just as many white deaths as black deaths. How do you account for whites being doubly represented in the death toll if it were blacks being discriminated against? I was in a flood and maybe got 200$. The blacks in Katrina got thousands. Again, discrimination is partially a matter of perspective...what you think you deserve with or without earning it. But us whites aren't allowed to talk about all the dead white people in Katrina, are we? We aren't allowed to talk about how they got dead. Racism is wrong. And I feel for you. Nothing like walking down the street and being called white beeyatch, being denied services, having to wait in line in the emergency room when you have real life threatening emergency while the blacks in line behind you asking directions get waited on first, same thing at the shoe store, etc. If what happens to non whites in the south is anything like what they do to us whites here in the bay area, then I feel for you. It's wrong either way. Even with having the Mexicans throwing bottles at me, trying to force me in their car, grabbing my son off the street and beating him up and all the other crap we whites go through I still don't advocate hate and violence to other races and I know people aren't born that way and I know white people didn't make them that way. They were taught to hate and to project their problems onto others such as women and white people, just like the white man in question was taught or some other way learned to hate and project it onto all blacks.

we have some out here in california but there mainly on the down low. now if you start working for them then you might know who they are & that there around. but the ones out here seem to dislike all races. not just the blacks. am sorry to say this but alot of people in the u.s right now are in the poverty level or below it. people are struggling to make ends meet. & those people are not only blaming blacks. there blaming illegals for services they dont even qualify for in the first place.

just to let you know a gallon of milk will cost you out here 3.89, a gallon of gasoline will cost between 2.99 - 3.39 in some cities its even more. not mention that a single apartment will cost you about 700.00 - 900.00 a month for rent. the bigger apartments are even more expensive.

In California, they live on the outskirts of the city, in trailer parks and isolated communities. Their main activity is selling meth. They are not a real threat to anyone but the people who live around them.
