This morning when I went to petsmart we saw one of my dad's friends, who also has fish tanks, and he was buying a very cool little creature. It was about an inch and a half around, brownish black, and sucking on the bag. When I asked him what it was he said it was an octo something another. It was round and kinda looked like an octopus but without legs. I know it isn't an octopus so anyone know what it was?

No it wasn't an otocinclus, I have one of those. It didn't look like a fish at all. It was just a round ball suckling on the bag.

Did it look anything like this? It is a hillstream loach. It also could have been an otocinclus: http://www.otocinclus.com/feeding.html

Ah, the Otocinclus cocama, or possibly the Otocinclus affinis - also called the Otto. It's a catfish that feed exclusively on algae and soft algae-based foods.

Was this just round in outline, or round like a sphere? A fish, or something else?

When I read the question, the first thing that came to mind was what's known as a freshwater flounder (actually brackish - see link with photos: http://www.aquariumadvice.com/profiles/6_14_en.html) I wouldn't try to go by color if it's one of these - they change color to camouflage themselves.

The scientific name is Achirus.

It's an Otocinclus, which is a dwarf algae eater. It grows less than two inches and will suck on algae in your tank.

I believe you bought a otocinclus. It is similar to a pleco and usually spends most of its time sucking on the glass of the tank trying to get algea. I heard they like to be in the dark and eat algea wafers.

It was probably a small algae eater called an otocinclus.
