Is it illegal to own a CD and copy it to your memory stick? State of California. I want to put it in my PSP

Copying music or movies to your memory stick should not violate the fair use policy, if you bought your DVD or CD legally. As long as you do not share that music or allow others to copy it, it should b e perfectly legal. The record industry might try to argue that point, but you should be well within your rights.

It is legal to back your data up for personal use. Your music CDs would be considered data. If you distribute said data, then it becomes illegal.

I can't say for sure, but I think it's legal as long as it's for your own personal use, and that you don't intend to sell or distribute it to others, or claim it as your own creation. Just to make sure, you might want to get permission from the original artists, since it is copyrighted material.
