It sounds just like an orb weaver...amazing how many questions about these there are.
I know that Orb weavers are large and scary looking, but they are harmless. They can bite, but they'd rather run and they are not poisonous. They are beneficial insects that eat other insects you would rather not have around. Just find a stick, remove the web, and it is very likely the spider will find a more private location since it was disturbed.
Here is a pic for comparison.

Ewwwww it sounds horrible. Stand as far away as possible and watch it until someone comes to your rescue. If need be, call your neighbour or a friend to come put it out/get rid of it. But DO NOT GO TO SLEEP with it in your room, you don't know what that crazy thing is capable of! And if it comes towards you, scream as loud as you can at it and stamp your feet. Hopefully that will scare it off.

Is it an argiope spider? They are large, yellow and black, spectacularly-colored, and harmless (at least to humans; they're death to insects!).

Wikipedia talks about these spiders, which are called different names and look different in different countries, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Andrew's_Cross_spider. There are pictures at this website.

If you want to get rid of this spider, coax it into a container and toss it into your garden, where it will eat mosquitos and other insects that would otherwise sting you.
