Is it the nifty little CDs they put on store shelves? Or the free month of service? Do people even use AOL after the free month, and if so, why?

I don't know about others, but my sister continues to use it (after 14 years of paying through the nose for it) because she's stubborn and has never been known to admit she's wrong. lol - that and she's got all her crap stored in that email thing and she'd have to reload everything if she changed. Oh yeah, and because if she was on Yahoo, I'd expect her to im me sometimes, lol.

I use it because of my name. My names is an original, so I like the uniqueness of it. There are many variations of my screen name. I have had the account for a kazillion years. I was paying for it, and then discovered I didn t have to. So, I stopped paying, but I still use it. Several family members use other names on my account, and my husband has his own account. I have others, such as Yahoo!, Excite, a school account, gmail, etc., but I prefer AOL. The other e-mail accounts are not as robust as my AOL account.

Because AOL practically started the internet for home users. And many people liked the services and just stuck with it...

Wow, the first guy is totally clueless. All of the people still paying for AOL are those that are still (for a variety of reasons) on dial-up. AOL is now free (other than dial-up) and most people either leave or switch to the free version of AOL when they switch to broadband. Why? Well, some people like keyword search, the communities, etc.

UPDATE:
"If I'm so clueless, then how come I can get dial-up for far cheaper with another ISP than with AOL. It's the same exact Internet. Only AOL charges more..."

You're clueless because you think that is why people use Macs.

For the same reason people use Macs: they think that if they use something that is expensive, they will look cool.
