You ignore the original tenets of your religion (because all religions say more or less the same thing, and all teach tolerance, kindness/goodness, and respect of the sacredness of human life) -and you listen to the interpretations of self-styled "prophets/messiahs/gurus" who have distorted the "scriptures" to suit their own self-serving ends and visions of power.

Extremism evolves from taking out of context certain texts and accentuating an obscure perception of what they mean, ignoring or skirting around any contradictory messages that may exist elsewhere in their religious teachings.

It is currently perceived as being peculiar to Islam, but that is not true. All faiths have their extremists (even to this day),and the Christan religion, historically, has had way more than its fair share.

The difference, nowadays, is that the policies of "western" governments, by both omission and commission, have created social injustices which appear to have been especially targetted at Muslim populaces. Therefore there are vast numbers of young Muslims, perceiving injustice, who are extremely receptive to hearing (spurious) religious justifications for acts which offer some sense of vengeance.

A religious extremist usually has been so brain washed from the time he/she was little that they know no other way of life. They believe that as long as they are serving their god(s) that nothing they do is wrong. They believe that only their religion/ way of life is the right one, and that by converting or distroying members of other religions, they are doing the work of their God(s).

You would probably have to be "brainwashed" by some sort of guru, whereby you no longer think for yourself but accept whatever is "dished out" to you. You become pretty much a robot, and do what you're told, for the "greater glory" of "Whoever". You certainly no longer have a personality of your own, no will power, nothing except this one way street to martyrdom (or whatever).

It requires brainwashing, in most cases. In other cases, it is weak minded individuals who will fall for anything.

BTW, I am not referring to those who have a healthy love of god, but extremists only.
