This is something meant to encourage you youngsters to study hard in school and prove it wrong.

Besides, "best" is kind of a vague term. "Best" at what? In what way? In some ways, we aren't the "best" as it is. In other ways we have a remarkable and lasting advantage over other countries.

Our education system is not producing the kind of education it needs to in order for us to continue to be competitive in technology; this is true. Our standards are not high enough; many teenagers graduate from high school barely literate. Post-secondary education is becoming prohibitively expensive for many people. Such things will pose yet another obstacle for the middle class. Japan and China will completely, irreparably eclipse us in terms of education if we're not careful. And well-paying jobs will become an even rarer, more precious commodity. Living standards will be affected.

Militarily, China is becoming more of a force to be reckoned with.

Having said that, the U.S. still offers its citizens the most personal liberty that any nation offers. The U.S. still has a democratically elected government (though our electoral system has some significant weaknesses) and a system of checks and balances within that government (though the checks-and-balances system has some significant weaknesses). We still have, in general, a standard of living that citizens of many other countries envy. Travel out of country, and you'll find this to be true. If a person owns a house and car, no matter what condition it may be in, they are among the wealthiest 8% of the world's population. We really don't know how good we have it. Hopefully, we'll recognize that soon enough to preserve our way of life.

But in all reality, worse things could happen to our nation than to fall slightly in rank among "best countries." I would ask your teacher to specify what being the "best country" means in their mind.

Glad to see our educators are so good at keeping up national pride in our children...

I'll tell you this, I've been to China, I've been all over Asia, also Brazil, ect....the average standard of living among regulat people in all these places would be unacceptable to the poor here. You ever share a toilet with THE WHOLE BLOCK! nasty

the PanAsian Confederation? That is not even something that exists.

Europa....an icy moon that orbits Jupiter?
Ohhh, I think you mean the EU...well first the EU would have to become a country. Then we can start looking at things.

Not the best in what category.?
Education? we are the worse in the western hemisphere.
In athletic activity? we are one of the best
In crime? We are the best when it comes to crime.
Justice? We are the best again. Nobody kills more innocent people due to wrongful conviction in court. When somebody performes a DNA test after they put him/her 6 feet under they shrug their shoulders and say:oops, we made a mistake.
By the way; do you know why the crude oil is so expensive?
Because OPEC gets the money in $ and the $ is getting weak and weaker.
Consequently OPEC raises the price to compensate for the
weak currency.

Sounds like you teacher is a liberal. Pay no attention to her or him.

America is getting stronger and stronger and is getting richer and richer while our technology gets better and better as our our standard of living gets higher and higher.

Our advantage over the world is widening, not decreasing. Your teacher is a moron. And tell your parents about her bias. You might be able to get her fired.
