That's the problem that we face today, Paul. People don't want the responsibility of taking care of others (at least not at their own expense). It's so much easier to shove that responsibility onto an entire society and expect the working class to do it on their behalf.

I'm in favor or taking all government programs away with the exception of national security.

I would be in favor of states taking care of their own welfare.

I think Social Security should be privatized.

I think the Space Program should still fall under the Federal Government.

I think whatever the states cannot do: Trade agreements, National Defense, National Highways, Interstate Commerce, etc. should fall under the National Government. Everything else should go back to the States. For example, does D.C know what's best for the education of our children, or does the state and local governments? All we're doing is being robbed by Congress, then they turn around and give it back to the states with the most Congressional seniority. The whole system sucks.

Actually privatization creates competition and competition results in a better product. Currently, I do not think welfare is working at all. Many lazy people are laughing at the gov't and at the taxpayers b/c welfare sends them a check every month. Many people are living independently wealthy. Many are not poor for any reason other than their lack of effort. When these people take advantage of the system, others who really need welfare get the short end of the stick. In some respects, it might be a good idea. I saw a guy on welfare going into another help center that gave out money to distressed people....the guy was out of smokes and asked the woman if she would give him money so he could buy more. That is where a lot of our tax dollars are going. Most people who disagree with making these programs private have no idea what is really going on within these programs.
It is absolutely pathetic.

For those who are whining about the Great Depression:
-Yes people starved
-It was quite a different time from today
-Those people worked hard and most deserved welfare
-Today most poor created the situation themselves
-There is a difference between the poor little old lady who cannot afford to heat her apartment and the guy who is sapping off of the system b/c he knows he can....he is the one taking the welfare money and buying shrimp, steak, and big screen tv's.

Why should these people have the luxuries that some middle to upper class do not even have. Everyone needs to wake up.

It would be nice to get rid of all the government programs and put all those people out of work...I'm sure that they could find work maybe at McDonalds or in the service area since the USA has become a service-oriented country instead of a manufacturing country.

Read the link below and learn a little history.....then ask yourself if it is possible for history to repeat itself. All the signs are there for another downfall.

You forgot your own people, privet contractors to provide beef to the Reservations was prime example. Many starved the white culture with out a tribe or family group many starved. Years ago before KBR outrage over a $400 hammer now we pay $5000 a day for the hammer and it is not ours the work is not done right often, and corruption in government contracting is a an all time high. A government employee might make $100,000 a year but privatized it would cost ten times that.
How soon we forget!

i second suthrnlyt but would add the space program is essential to human survival... one day the world will be over populated or we will destroy it in a way that will take much for repair... the space program should start to pay for itself by taking trash and propelling it into stars which we want to remain living to support life around a possible planet which can also have and support water and life. Making money by disposal of trash into stars would be a good step to help support other research which is needed.

There were several independant studies, funded by private investments AND donations, performed back in the 1980's, on these very subjects. With a very strengant set of guidelines, and G.O.A. Accounting oversite, the reports stated that the moneys, in these accounts would be FAR BETTER SERVED, to be in the free market place, RATHER THAN IN THEIR PRESENT ( and still corrent) CONDITIONS BY WHICH POLITICIANS HAD THE AVAILABILITY TO INTERVIEN, REMOVE, USE FOR OTHER PURPOSES ( READ SQUANDER ON PORK / PET PROJECTS) !!!! THE POLITICIANS IMMEDIATELY SQUASHED AND SILENCED THE / ALL NEWS MEDIA REPORTS !!!!! THE ANSWER WAS THEN, AND STILL IS YES !!! YES !!! YES !!!!!!

Because of government welfare I think many have became calloused to the idea of caring for others. It's so easy to just expect people to take advantage of gov. help.

This should be but it's a sad reality.

Nobody starved before welfare? Really?

Not really. Lots of people starved. Learn some history and stop making really dumb statements like that one.

I can see welfare being used as a safety net. Work for your money, job placement, and/or job training.

The space program is moving and will continue to move private.

Social security is something we already pay for and already needs an outside source to stay out of the dog food line.
