It depends on how far away you are. If you're not that many miles away you can just use the sunset and the stars as a compass and walk back home. Otherwise, you can hitch a ride in a kangaroos pouch. . .

You probably wouldn't survive. It's very unforgiving country out there. You wouldn't follow a stream because there are very few streams except after flooding rain and then it turns into an inland sea. The outback of Australia is desert. Anyone who goes to the outback unprepared is asking for trouble. That's why most of us live along the edges of the continent.
Lost or broken down - Do not leave your vehicle under any circumstances - a missing vehicle is easier to locate than missing people. Economise on water if you are not on a main road. If you intend to leave the main roads, let somebody know of your estimated time of arrival at your destination.

It's called 'HOOFING' it.........start walking. If you come upon a river follow it. Be on the look-out for poisonous snakes and crocs.
If you can figure out which way is North, South, East and West and the general direction of the closest inhabitated area then you're doing great

All you have to do if you are ever lost, whether in Australia or anyone else is simply take off all your clothes.
Within five minutes, someone will be there with a cell phone that takes pictures.

Better ask how would you stay alive in the first place! If you can find a river, follow it downstream. Then you would have water and food (fish). Water always leads to civilization, eventually. But be careful about those crocodiles! For me personally, it would take divine intervention. I live in Kansas.
