there are 2 players in my mind, both from my days, and hard to choose.
one is pete sampras, numbers speaking for him:14 grand slam wins, 4 time runner-up,64 career titles,a impressive career record of 762-222.and there are lot's of other to say here.
second one, another american, andre aggasi.
his career records aren't quite that impressive as sampras is but still not that far:8 grand slam wins, 7 time runner-up,60 career titles, career record 870-274.
he is the only man in open era to win all 4 grand slams,a complete player, not even one weakness in his game.
so, if i follow numbers i would say sampras but if think about what i saw over the year i would say agassi.

I think there are several great players, but only few make the
top. Each have their own strength and weakness. Given that
the number of grand slams won and quality of opponents
considered here is my best:
Pete Sampras. He was a complete player and had to be so
good to win 14 grand slams. He had the great Serve and also
volley was great. I think even if he had played today and taking
away his stamina, I think he would won few matches even
against Federer.
Federer follows Sampras and the next 2 years will tell the
entire story. Nothing taken away from Federer, but he needs
to win many more grand slams to be in the same category
of Sampras. If he does that and breaks the record, then he
would be the best. He can do it, because of his all round play.

Pete Sampras is "The King of Swing"
64 Career Titles
14 Grand Slams
Australian Open (1994, 1997)
Wimbledon (1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000)
U.S. Open (1990, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2002)
but the one downfall is no French Open Title
and i think Pete, in his prime, could beat Federer
but thats just my opinion!!

Pete Sampras is the greatest. He has 14 grand slams and 6 year-end rankings. However, I think Federer is the second best but on his way to maybe breaking Sampras' records and becoming the greatest. Also, they're both polite and modest, making them even greater.

Roger Feder not only is he the best tennis player of all time he is also the best athlete of all time. He is a true gentleman on the court. A humble winner. An intense competitor. A caring person helping others (unicef & other charities). A class Act. (only pro to send James Blake a get well note in the hospital in Rome). A tennis lover. A role model. A champion.

I would probably say Martina Navratilova- 334 singles and doubles titles. She won her first title in 1974 and her last in 2006. Can we say amazing ?????? She was one month shy of her 50th birthday and she still won a major title. She also won a Grand Slam title in 4 different decades. I am honored to be a fan !!!

Arthur Ashe! The first African American tennis player..and no I'm not african american. I did research on him when I was 12 for Black History Month. He was a positive influence on me then and I'll never forget his story.

Maria Sharapova, because I like the style she plays with. I also like that she is one of those people who never give up no matter what is going on. Like when she played Patty Schnyder in the fourth round of the French open and managed to win a long hard fight against her, on her wost surface. Another was at the Australian open when she beat Camille Pin in over the top heating temperatures.
