If At&T sells iphones, ask them about transfering your number to it. You might have to pay a fee but it doesn't hurt to ask them. :)

No, absolutely not. If you've been under contract for some time and haven't done a hardware upgrade (basically getting a new phone), you can either call customer service or visit a dealer and ask about how to get the iPhone. This will renew your contract (the longer the term, the cheaper you will get the phone) just so you're aware.

If you are on a very old Cingular plan or an old ATT plan, they *may* require you to change your plan, but if they do they will go over the different plans with you. There is no ECF (early cancellation fee) for changing your plan or changing your phone.

If you call customer care, they can mail you a phone which takes about 3-5 business days. If you do it in a store you get the phone that day.

Good luck!

Usually if you are using the same carrier then all you have to do is extend your contract in order to upgrade. The problem that you might run into is that it is too early to upgrade. Most companies will let you upgrade with about six months left on the contract because they have already made more than enough money to pay for the old phone.
