The best anti-virus is ESET NOD32 then Kaspersky. NOD32 is the only anti-virus that got an Advanced+ rating in tests conducted at http://www.av-comparatives.org/
However if you wish to save your money, AOL Active Virus Shield powered by Kaspersky is currently the best free anti-virus (99.62% detection rate). The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.
As far as anti-spyware, Ad-aware and Spybot are the best.

STAY AWAY from NORTON and LIVE CARE !! I am warning you now. Dont even THINK about one care.
What I think is the best on the market as for Anti-Spyware is X-Cleaner by Facetime, used to be SpywareGuide. I found that a few years ago and nothing seems to be able to touch it so far. EVEN Avg and / or Ewido.
Aslo below, I will add some other programs that I use. Parasites (virus', spyware, malware, adware, foistware etc..)are my "thing" and have been in the scene for over 4 years with it.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser.
you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus. i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar.
firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser.
as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE. download firefox for free, Just have a try:

i have had norton for awhile ,, and its ok, but last year for free i added Superantispyware.com , no probs, works excellent and its free, goodluck
