Classical liberal or modern liberal?
The classical liberal of the George Washington or Thomas Jefferson stripe believes in the addage that "the government that governs least governs best." A classical liberal believes that government should protect property rights on a first come, first serve basis (the guy who was there first gets first dibs). A classical liberal supports the second amendment. A classical liberal supports free markets. A classical liberal believes the individual's rights trump the rights of the government or government employees. A classical liberal believes that individuals should be left alone to pursue whatever makes them happy, as long as it doesn't infringe on the property or person of another. The classical liberal believes that everyone is capable of caring for themselves in all things and that it is immoral for the government to support enforced transfers of wealth. Trade and friendship with all, entangling alliances with none.
The modern "liberal" is actually a thinly disguised socialist bordering on a communist who believes that all members of a society belong to the government and the bureaucrats decide what is best for everyone and take the fruits of everyone's labor to divide in an "equitable" manner.

Liberalism is not about gay marriage, nanny states, higher taxes and intentionally weakening the military any more than Conservatism is about hating homosexuality, loving Jesus or nixing health care for babies.
Those make great sound-bytes, but neither defines the respective ideology.
Liberalism is the belief that one should be open to new ways of thinking; examine opportunities to improve/reform existing ways of thinking and doing; and typically coincides with a philosophy of maximizing the freedom of the individual.
Conservatism is the belief that preserving the status quo is of societal value; that working within the proven traditional way of thinking and doing is preferable; and that freedom of the individual can be okay, as long as it is within accepted, established, parameters.
Neither is particularly evil. One could sum up the differences by saying one is more "open to change" than the other. But I guess the name calling is more fun...

Being a former liberal, myself (until I matured enough to become a conservative), I'd say they don't *really* have *any* values! But, don't you really mean, "Progressives", which the current crop of Dems/Socialists/Commies would rather call themselves? Otherwise, I'd say it's "tax & spend", bigger and bigger government, Socialized Medicine, Affirmative Action, keeping abortion legal, especially to keep the black people from having too many children, keeping poor people, especially poor blacks and hispanics, under their control and dependent on "Big Brother" for handouts, "cradle to grave", etc.
FYI to all you present-day libs: I believe "Ryan M" has given the most asute, well-reasoned, answer to your sundry answers. He's definitely got *my* vote for "Best Answer"!

the Constitution and Bill of rights ;read the words of James Monroe, James Madison and Thomas Jefferson these were true liberals and men of vision, not cult leaders or party hacks. they gave us a gift that we have squandered for complacent, comfort and corporate profits.
