Hi all! I'll be 30 weeks pregnant on Thursday. I went to my OB yesterday and her nurse came in. She finds the baby's heartbeat and measures... I measured a little big, that was cool. Then, I'm telling her that the baby is REALLY active. So, she says that if ever I don't feel him move for a day I need to come right in. She tells me "I probably should not be telling you this," and proceeds to tell me about a woman that came in a few days before me that had not felt her baby move for 2-3 days. She explained she could not find a heartbeat, and that whenever that happens it is her practice to call in the doctor. She goes on to tell me the doctor could not find it either and then they put her right in ultrasound and nothing there either! I said "Oh my God! How far along was she?" She told me 6 months. I was just tripping nuts. Since then I've been freaking out! I was just fine up to now! Am I just overly sensative or was this innapropriate?

She was wrong to tell you about another patient in such detail, but right to tell you to come in if you don't feel activity for a day.
My OB told me that I should start counting fetal movement start around week 28 (I'll be starting week 27 on Thursday). It's easy to do. You should do this twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.
Check the clock and start counting movements of any kind. Stop counting when you reach ten and note the time. Often, you will feel ten movements in ten minutes or so. Sometimes it will take longer.
If you haven't had ten movements in one hour, have something to eat, make sure you are relaxed, and then continue counting. If two hours go by without ten movements, call your doctor immediately. Sometimes it is nothing but sometimes it can indicate fetal distress and you will need to go in right away to make sure everything is ok.
It's true that it is rare, but it can happen and if it does, you will want to know you did everything possible to prevent it.

That woman should be fired! Pregnant women are already full enough of worries about their unborn child- why compound it as a medical professional by telling an alarming story like that??? Mean lady. Anyway, I am sure both you and your baby will be just fine, and you should tell your OB about that nurse so she can stop her from telling any other pregnant ladies that horrifying story.

Oh wow...that was completely uncalled for!! I would not want to see that nurse again. You have enough on your mind and should be able to enjoy this time rather than have to worry about every move that is made!!!
Just try to relax and realize that every woman is different...just because it happened doesn't mean it will happen to you. Keep track of the baby's movements as normal.

WHY would she tell you that?! That is not her business to tell other patients problems, not is it appropriate to scare the living daylights out of another patient. That is SOOOOO rare - most pregnancies are perfectly normal and I'm willing to bet that other woman had problems the nurse did not divulge (although she seemed more than willing to gossip). Don't let this stress you out, and if it really does bother you then file a complaint to the doctor.

Personally, I think that it was an innappropriate thing to tell you. Working with pregnant women, she ought to know that this is going to make anyone edgy. All she needed to do was tell you to be aware that if you didn't feel it, to call in. I'm sure that you are an intelligent enough person that you didn't need to be told why! She needs to have better bedside manners! Congrats on the pregnancy!

extremely inapropriate. health care professionals come accross so many bad things, but they shouldnt be sharing it with everyone! dont worry, ur baby is fine. she is probably just a stupid new nurse that doesnt have anyone at home to share her days with. relax, ur fine. if anything, freaking out isnt good for u or for ur baby.

It was totally inappropriate and very unprofessional and very insensitive.
I would report it to my OB and the office manager immediately.

TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE. I would not listen to her again if she wants to begossipy. What was her point? She knows all pregnant women are already anxious. I would mention it to the doctor.
