Grateful Dead. Not even close. I like Lynard Skynard.
But the Grateful Dead is a lifestyle and a way of being, and as somebody mentionned, a catalogue of American Folk Music. whereas Skynard had a dozen radio hits.
The Dead was on the road for 35 years. Skynard toured for what, 1/2 a dozen years? The Dead never have to play the same show twice--how much difference could there be between one Skynard Show and another?

GRATEFUL DEAD.
Lynyrd Skynrd was a great rock band, but the Dead created magic. I think of the Dead as Alchemists, and I heard Ken Keasy say the same thing. The Dead were way beyond being a rock band, or a jam band.
A perfect example of their music being alchemy is the Slipknot! part of Help on the Way>Slipknot!>Franklin's Tower.

Grateful Dead
Vast number of songs vs. a dozen radio hits
Extended jam vs. thumb fingered routine
Zoned out preps and wookies vs. Violent or maudlin drunks
Two, Two, Two incredible drummers vs. forgetable beats
Different show every night vs. same show for two millenium
No real comparison

Tough choice.
I'll say the Dead. They are a catalogue of American folk music.
