And what about the puppies in the cages at the pounds?
The more people buy the puppies from the pet stores, the more those cages will be filled with NEW puppies from the puppy mills. The slower that those cages get empty, the slower they get refilled. The slower that they get refilled, the less puppies that will be produced by the puppy mills.
You may feel sad for those puppies in the pet stores. But if they stay longer, there will be less puppies in the long run who will have to go through the same thing.

You should definitely go with a shelter. These days most people work and the shelters understand this. If you can demonstrate that you are in a situation to offer a good, loving home to an animal, they should not turn you down. It sounds like you've really thought very hard about this and are not taking on the responsibility lightly, and I'm sure they'll recognize that. As an animal-lover, you should avoid getting a dog from a pet store, as the dogs they sell are usually from so-called puppy mills, and you may be buying a dog with health or behavioral issues, not to mention supporting an industry that cares very little about the animals' welfare. The fact that the store will let the dogs go to anyone, whether or not they can provide the right environment, just goes to show that they're in it purely for the money. PLEASE adopt from a shelter! Good luck!

It is true that those pets will be stuck in that small space until they are bought - but the animals in shelters are stuck in cages for a week until they are killed. The animals in pet shops have longer to be adopted and if they are not will then probably be sent to a shelter anyway. Animals in pet shops have been especially bred to be sold in pet shops so if there is a high demand and those animals get sold more will be bred to replace those sold. So if people stop buying animals in pet shops breeders will stop breeding which will mean less animals being killed every day. Also when you buy an animal from the shelter they are still as cute as the ones from the pet shops. There is no difference. They are checked and given shots and microchipped and everything at the shelter. I adopted my cat just hours before she would have been put down. i have had her for over a year and she has never even scratched me once in that time. She is so affectionate and adorable and I am so glad I managed to save her life.

There will always be the saps that buy pets from a store, so you don't need to worry about any pup growing old there. Adopting a shelter animal not only costs A LOT less, but theoretically will help stop puppy mills, and also benefit your community.

If you buy the pets in the pet stores - they will just continue to sell them all - if you boycott the pet stores as a source of buying pets then they will have no reason to continoully get them from abusive unhealythy puppy mills & back yard breeders -- if you want to get a REALLY ill & over priced pet go to the pet store - if you want to save a life of animals on death row go to the shelters/ pound.
Pet stores don't treat their animals kindly or humainly . By buying the animals in the store is EXACTLY what they want to do - they make the animals some what in need of a person to 'rescue' buy them -- this is what they do -exploit animals for their own profit.
Please don't support pet stores who sell pets.

If people keep buying from pet stores, it encourages them to keep acquiring animals from puppy mills and selling them. The only way to stop the industry is to cut off the market for animals from this source.
And if they don't sell. they won't live in a cage forever. No store keeps inventory (live or not) forever. Chances are they will end up for adoption in a shelter.

Most of the animals that come from pet stores are a result of Puppy Mills. If we don't buy them, there will be no market for them and Puppy Mills will be forced to control their breeding. Ok, that's all hypothetical, but it sounds like a great idea.
Pet store animals do mostly come from puppy mills though. When you buy an animal from a pet store, you are putting money into the pocket of puppy millers!

Yes, you are right. But, if those pets don't get adopted (from the store), they get sent to the animal shelter since the store has breeders who keep breeding for the store. And, if they don't get of the hamsters by the time they get a new litter of hamsters in, then, like I said, they go to the animal shelter. If the pets go to a shelter that kills after a certain time, then, they get killed. So, it really is best that you adopt from a shelter, since, if it is a kill shelter, then, you are saving a life! I hope that this answers your question! Thanks,

If more people adopt pets from shelters, it will put the pet store's selling puppy mill animals out of business. That is a good thing, as they promote horrible treatment of animals by purchasing dogs and puppies from puppy mills/farms.

I was a volunteer at Dog shelter.
Animals at pet stores are from backyard breeders that do not care about the health of the dog, they do not give the dogs vacinations, they do not take the dogs to the vet for shots
(too expensive) etc, before selling them to pet stores.
Most of the dogs, as adorable as they are, may be very unhealthy and the pet store will not reveal that information.
You're right, they will probably stay in the case until purchased.
You won't get a guarantee of the health of the dogs in the pet store. At the shelter where I volunteered, the dogs had shots and all other immunization they needed before going to their new forever home.
Our dogs were give top quality dog food, our dogs were given a weekly bath. One doesn't know what is fed to pet store dogs.
Our dogs were socialized with humans, we ran and played with them, we gave them hugs and they gave us puppy kisses.
Pet stores are in it "for the money," nothing else.
Please consider your local shelter or ASPCA/SPCA.
