It's been a long time since I've read any of the books, but I thought that the cruciatus curse made it's victims go insane. It's used on Hermione, though, and she's fine. Why doesn't she go insane, too?

Only if it is used on someone for a really long time can they go insane, like the Longbottoms. But Hermione was fine, because it is just used for torture not to make people go insane (although it can be used for that too).

The Cruciatus curse creates pain. It can only make someone insane if they have the curse on them for an extensive amount of time [the Longbottoms had the curse put on them until they went insane which is why you may think this]
Hermione was only under the curse for a little bit which is why she didn't go insane.

The Cruciatus curse causes 'unbearable pain' but its strength appears to be dependent upon the strength of will of the one casting the spell. Bellatrix says to Neville when he tries it that 'You have to really mean it'!
Cedric was cast upon by krum in HP4 (when imperiused by Barty Crouch Jr. and at the same time Harry was cast upon (twice) by Voldemort which destroyed part of the Horcrux with in him but didn't cause him to go insane!
Cruciatus in Latin as a p.p. would mean to have been tortured as Crucio is to torture or crucify!

it doesnt make them go insane... the cruciatus curse just tortures them and puts them in alot of pain ... none of them cause them to go insane..and in my harry potter book then new one... theres a publishing error so watch for that

it doesnt make them go insane. its a torture cruse, if you cause someone enough pain it will mentally unbalance them - like the longbottoms. However Hermione doesnt suffer it for a particularly long period of time.

No, it is a torture curse. In the case of the Longbottoms, it was prolonged to the extent that they became mentally deranged.

it makes you have a LOT of pain, not go insane, if its used enough times, it could make u go insane.

im not sure but i think it just tortures someone. like with pain. so i guess prolonged use of it could make someone go insane...
