You can find a poem or a story about animals or whatever he is interested and make a little story book for him that mentions him on the story, like changing the name of the main character to his name.

I think a teeshirt craft would be cool.
They have crayola crayons for fabric.
You can get an iron on transfer kit for a printer, then any scanned item, computer artwork on a MS paint document, or clip art can be put on a shirt.
You can also do tie dye, it is really easy and kind of mysterious...you do all these scrunches and wraps, and then dipping at certain angle. The instructions are pretty straightforward, but at least for me, it is kind of hard to believe that following them will give you that finished product you wanted. Then you unroll everything and VIOLE! It's a reveal for everyone.
Make sure you get a shirt that is kind of big for now, and he can wear it for a while. And make sure that the fabric is compatible with whatever you are putting on it.
Don't sew a bunch of crap on the shirt, it needs to be soft and cuddly...and wash n dry n wear.

For about $10 you could make him a whole bunch of snakes! Get some ties at a thrift store and a bag of polyfil, one red felt square and a package of wiggly eyes. Sew up the skinny end of the tie, stuff firmly, sew up the fat end inserting a forked tongue at the point, sew on some wiggly eyes! You could also fill them with beans or styrobeads like from a bean bag chair. Imagine the wild jungle of old gaudy tie snakes and the fun he could have with them!

Make a model car, or plane, or a dinosaur. What kind of things are you making anyway? Models, clothes/shirts?
Get a white t-shirt and some of that Iron On Printer Paper and design him a cute little shirt.

A six year old probably wants to be given a craft that you will do with them right away. They love wooden models such as trains/planes/animals.
