I was about a man who arrived in an American town and went to live in a big old house on a hill. He had strange guests who arrived to stay with him and was spied upon by someone who lived in the town, who found out the the man and his guests were some sort of aliens who had taken on human form and were here to take over the earth. It was (surprise, surprise!) then up the the man from the town to try and save everyone from these strangers. Any ideas??

The Stephen King book that most resembles is Salem's Lot, except the people in the big old house on the hill are vampires, not aliens. It was made into a TV miniseries in the 70s and again a few years ago.

If it's not Stephen King, it might also be The Visitation (based on the book by Frank Peretti). But in that book, it's also not aliens in the house; it's a renegade prophet and his followers/henchmen.

EDIT - Hmmmm ... thumbs-downs galore for honest-effort best guesses. Thumb in the eye to the troll!!

I think that movie you are talking about is "The Tommyknockers" (1993) which was based of a Stephen King novel. Don't get me wrong, I haven't seen it in awhile so I could be mistaken.

Here is the plot:

The small town of Haven becomes a hot-bed of inventions all run by a strange green power device. The whole town is digging something up in the woods, and only an alcoholic poet can unfathom the secret of the tommyknockers.

I think it's Salems Lot. David Soul was in the version that I watched a good few years ago.

Doesn't sound like the tommyknockers to me, or any Stephen king either.
