My boyfriend told me I had to think of a great baby gift for his BEST FRIEND...it is their first child and was due yesterday so I don't have much time. I would love it to be unique and something that nobody would think of! Got any ideas?

What was the most useful gift you received?

A diaper cake! The mom-to-be will LOVE it and it will be the gift she remembers for years. You will be saving them some serious $$ on diapers too. The big diaper cake here has enough for 2 weeks worth of diaper changes, plus all the diaper changing supplies hidden inside, like wipes, vaseline, desitin, powder, etc. Have a look!

They will love it! This is my favorite gift idea for a new baby. Take the diaper cake to the hospital after baby is born and it will be the talk of the maternity ward, guaranteed.

How about some babysitting "coupons" for when the baby gets older.. That will give MOM/DAD some much needed time alone ! That's a great gift in my book ! You can go to Microsoft.com and get the "template" and fill it out with the info and print.. It's a good gift, and very appreciative gift.. Give it to them with a box of diapers.. Those are always used and well received... Also, it's good to drop off a "covered dish" for when the couple comes home and she's too tired to cook... They can just defrost and heat whatever you made- and get a cheap/disposible dish they can keep... good luck

I love giving books as presents for newborn babies. Not that many people think of it. I got clothes from absolutely everyone when my kids were born. If it's their first baby, chances are they don't ahve any little kid books and this is a great way for them to start to collect some. You can go to the bookstore and just enjoy browsing and find ones that you remember liking as a kid. Lots of books come in board book form now so the parents don't have to worry about the books getting ripped or chewed on. Price range varies tremendously. You can get one or two and spend $10 or you can lots of books and spend far more. It's great to start reading to a kid right away and it's great for parents to have several books because otherwise they are the ones who get bored reading the same thing over and over. Just some quick suggestions if you have no ideas or no time to browse:
"Gossie" and "Gossie and Gertie"
Any books by Sandra Boynton -- she has about a dozen titles and they're all cute and clever and sing-songy
Lots of Dr. Suess books are great for beginners and come in board book form
"GoodNight Moon" is a must-have for just about every baby.
A pop-up book can be great for a young baby because it really gives them something cool to look at.
"More, More, More said the Baby" is good

She is going to need lots of diapers, baby wipes, baby powder and diaper rash medication for sure. I know these gifts don't qualify as unique but I am more of a realist...if you don't like these ideas I would consider a gift card.

Gift cards - WalMart and their favorite restaurants (preferably ones that deliver) are best - but anyplace that carries baby/food items.
An IOU for a free night of babysitting coupled with movie tickets or a gift certificate.
Frozen homemade meals.

A really good sling like a moby wrap or a hotsling... I would have LOVED to get one of those!

Uhm... Big stuff is overated! Babies really just need mom and maybe diapers...

A Maclaren stroller would be nice :) I would go for a sling first though, they won't need the stroller for 6 months, at least.
