Status symbols or just showing off? Personally, I don't care about things like that. I can't understand why somebody wants to, say, pay $80,000 or even $50,000 for one car. My $17,000 Saturn Ion (which I thought was a bit expensive, but my husband wanted me to have some of the safety features, knowing it would be the future Mom Mobile) gets me from A to B. Well, the Ford Escort I had prior did as well, but only around the city and we thought I would be doing some interstate driving, which is why my husband bought me the car when he did.

I think that flashing logos, regardless of whether or not somebody can actually afford it or just think they can, is tacky, as though they are either showing off that they are "somebody", they think they're "somebody" or they want to be "somebody". (If I buy/wear/drink/eat this, the people will think I'm cool, rich, wonderful...) Besides, it's free advertising for the multi-gabillion dollar companies. If they want me to walk around with a flashy logo-printed purse, they can pay ME the money to do so. However, most of them are made of leather and I refuse to do leather.

My younger sister-in-law, whom I think lives in a dream world, thinks that if she has the "cool" stuff people will think she's cool. (Which is why, I think, she does do things like only get Frappuccinos from Starbucks [then complain about being fat, gee, those things don't help], shop at trendy mall stores and talk about how she wants a Merceds when she's rich and famous.)

Just my two cents. I'm happy with non-logos, non "status symbol" stuff, and much happier shopping second hand than buying new.

agree with above on jimmy choos but not a mercedes, anyone can buy one. now a classic SL500 mercedes, thats different. how about a bentley, cuban cigars, ping golf clubs. A big house is the ultimate status symbol.
