yes, I usually give them my change when I leave a store...If they're begging at the corner of a freeway exit ramp I usually givem them a buck.

Be careful and selective about it. I used to live, literally, on the street, and my only income was what I could earn selling The Big Issue. It annoyed me intensely to see beggars, who ALL recieved state benefits and mostly would go home to their flats at the end of the day, raking in more money in half an hour than I could expect to make all day. And if you do buy The Big Issue make sure the vendor has the proper ID. Stock theft from vendors is not rare. (They don't get the stock free, they buy every copy after the first ten on the day they start.) Just remembered another option. Some charities sell vouchers which can be exchanged for food and clothes at their soup kitchens. People would sometimes give these to me when I was selling The Issue. I never used them myself but I did know first-hand which of the ostensibly homeless people around were genuine cases and which were chancers so I could pass them on to those who'd make best use of them. In addition, the chancers never use the soup kitchens so if they were given a voucher they'd throw it away. The money that had been paid for it, though would remain valuable for the charity. They were a good idea.

Depends on the situation. If I see an elderly person who OBVIOUSLY looks homeless & looks like they haven't eaten for a while I will give them all the change that I have. But there is also the people out there that are scammers. They deliberately go out in dirty clothes, with dirty hair & beg all day & that is what they do for their "job" so they don't have to work. Then they go home to their nice home, get showered up,change into their nice clothes & go to a nice restaurant with all the money they collected that day. I have seen a news report on this a few years ago. One scammer said on a good day he could collect up to $300. Nice, huh?
Edit: They had him blacked out so it wouldn't reveal his identity.

On occasion, but rarely. For the most part you are not helping them when you do it. You are just encouraging them to beg, rather than seeking the help that they need. Many of them just save the money for booze or drugs, so you could potentially be hurting them.

A couple of days ago my husband and I were driving In our car and we reached a red light then we saw a woman walking with a piece of cardboard with homeless and hungry please help on it so of course we had to give her something. That kind of stuff just breaks me heart because people shouldn't have to do that If they have family but who knows.....

Not beggars...if they are playing an instrument, or dancing around, or something like that, I'll throw some $$ in their cup...but not the guy that just sits there and asks for your change.
