Sounds like you're overseas in the U.K., but where I'm at in the U.S. I'm paying about $21/month for DSL which is rated at 3Mbps. Just to give you some kind of idea what 3Mbps means, that's roughly 60 times faster than dial-up.
Others here have even faster connections using a cable broadband provider like TimeWarner's RoadRunner. However, most with that service are paying well over $40/month. It just depends how fast you need your connection. Going from dial-up to any broadband is a huge jump. Going from broadband to a faster broadband is nice, but nowhere near the kind of leap you took from dial-up.
You'll be happy with anything over 1Mbps.

We recently changed to Talktalk and now pay only £21 a month. We get up to 8Mb broadband, as this depends on how far from your local exchange you are. Price also includes phone rental, free UK calls for up to 70 mins and, using a 5 digit prefix code, free (70 min) calls to major European countries, Oz, New Zealand, Canada & US. It's called Talktalk 3 International.
Remind mum that with broadband you can use the phone and the internet at the same time !!

The ones above are poor quality deals I think. I have unlimited aol broadband silver for just £14.99. It's really really good and there's unlimited downloads and usage. Also you get free WIRELESS modem router worth £55. It's good, trust me. I also had difficulty persuading my mum, but this was so good she accepted. I don't know the speed but I personally think it's more than enough. Hope this helps!

I've just migrated from Tiscali to Orange. Tiscali does 8Mg unlimited downloads and free UK landline phone calls for £14. The reason I've moved to Orange is because I was tempted by the offer of a laptop from Currys for £50.The also provide the same as Tiscali with the addition of free international calls.

hi,obviously everyone is going to be recommending thier own isp(internet service provider),however the reason i am going to recommend bt total broadband(http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayCategory.do?categoryId=CON-TOTAL-BB-R1&s_intcid=con_intban_btcom_con_hub_btbb_promo_homepage_rhs)is mainly because of value for money and because of its all round reliability and service
i have bt total broadband(option 3)and for this you get the following................bt home hub with the bt hub phone(to use with bt broadband talk),the hub comes in both white and black(new),and has 2 x ethernet sockets ,1 x u.s.b socket,54mbps wireless lan,and a telephone socket for your hub phone, its possible to connect up to 10 p.c,s to the hub
you also get 2 x microfilters,1 x 2m ethernet lead,1 x 2m u.s.b lead and a power lead
you get unlimited downloads(fair usage applies..this means if you kick the ring out of it and download over 500gb a month you may get a call from bt to say "cool it")
you get a installtion set up disk, which contains all drivers and also the security software that comes with option 3(norton anti-virus,norton anti-spyware,parental controls and much more)
you get up to 8mb connection speed however in reality this is more likely to be around 4mb,however this is still very fast
other features include a 5gb online bt vault, which is a safe online storage account to save all your important data, and also 24/7 online and telephone support
i have had bt broadband since it first began and have never had any problems, alot of people say bt is expensive however you get what you pay for,and bt is worth every penny
bt total broadband option 3....£22-99 per month
hope this helps
good luck!

BT is the ultimate in each factor, apart from fee,I had talktalk, what a nightmare.BT technical help is amazingly good, additionally BT run each and all of the exchanges meaning you hold related each and all of the time.somewhat some broadband companies won't be in a position to get their kit to artwork marvelous in BTs exchanges, thats why human beings have issues.

I use BT Broadband and am very, very happy. You can start off with their Option1 for £8.95 for the first six months, then it goes up to I think £17.99 or £19.99. Well worth it.
