you somehow get into the post office durring the night and take a package that was shipped to you but wasn't delivered yet?

I'm not planning anything of the sort, don't worry!

Actually it would be stealing. A package addressed to you becomes your property once it has been delivered. Before that, it is the property and responsibility of the postal system.

This is the way the law works and you want it to stay that way. Imagine if someone sent a package with 2 kilos of heroin in it to you. You can't be arrested for possession while the package is held by the post office because it has not become your property.

You need to look at this question from the point of view of the post office.
They have been charged with custody of a given package. Their duty is to deliver the package to you.
Technically, THEY should do so.
Your breaking and entering relieves them of that responsibility. What you are stealing has nothing to do with your ownership of the package. It has more to do with integrity and honor.
The integrity and honor of the postal system is what is stolen.

It wouldn't technically be considered stealing, but it would be considered breaking and entering. You could get into a lot of trouble just for breaking into a government building. Even if you were just taking your package.

Yes it would be stealing. The person who pays for the package has paid the postal service to deliver it to your door. Untill it does that. the package belongs to the postal service and the person who sent it. Not you. Then there would be breaking and entering, and my alltime favorite, criminal trespass

Yes it would be stealing but not of the package. The theft would be in the license taken with another individuals property without their consent (trespass).

Sure, that doesn't sound too bad. I think you'd get in more trouble for the breaking and entering than the taking of your own package

it would be consider trespassing private property although if you just go in the post office when it's open and get the package it wouldn't cause any problems! why go in at night?

It is stealing because it has been put into your possession yet. Until they give it to you, it is their property and they are responsible for it. Plus breaking and entering and tampering with the mail.

no, its not stealing, since the package belonged to you, if that is all you take, but it is breaking and entering, or even if let in, its trespassing

No, but breaking and entering is against the law.
