I am an HGV 1 truck driver and have been dazzled on many occasions by inconsiderate drivers using rear fog lights in rainy conditions. According to uk highway code they should ONLY be used in THICK fog ,where the visibility is 50 metres or less . The road rescue sevices dont help by 'advising' drivers to use fog lights in rainy conditions either. If I feel the need to use them, (about 5 times in last 3years) I always switch them off when I see headlights in rear view mirrors so I dont dazzle!!

A star for you sir! One of my pet hates.
I've been driving for 20 years - think I've only used rear fog lights on 4 or 5 occasions. Some people seem to think they are to be used at the first sign of a mist or a light drizzle - all it does is dazzle - very dangerous!
The obvious way to test whether they are required is to judge by the visibility of other cars' rear lights. If you can see them OK, no need for fog lights!
I'm glad to say police near us have started clamping down on it recently.

Here in the UK it's illegal to use fog lights unless the visibility is reduced to less than 100 metres. Switching them on just because it's raining is selfish and inconsiderate because they dazzle other road users, making it more likely for them to have an accident, which could include running into you. If the visibility is under 100m I use them myself for the same reason, I don't want someone to be unaware of my presence until it's too late to brake without crashing into me. This applies in both fog and rain. Obviously nobody should be going that fast in such conditions, but some people are stupid and will do so anyway.

Because they are stupid and incompetent and they have usually switched ON the fog lights 2 weeks before when it was foggy and didn't realise they had an OFF switch. Beats me how they never see the light on the dash .I hate fog lights and we very rarely get REAL thick fog in this country anymore so I can't see a use for them. All they do is mask the brake lights and annoy the driver behind.

I'm a car driver and I agree, althogh I must confess using my rear fog light once in clear weather at night when driving an unfamilier vehicle. It took quite a while before I realised and switched of

Good question. I don't think the users really know the effect they are having on others, plus they make their brake lights harder to see.

If the fog is thick enough to have the foglights on, they shouldn't be going more than 20 mph anyway.

Another pet hate of mine is when you stop at traffic lights, and the vehicle in front keeps their foot on the brake pedal, dazzling you with brake lights. Are they too bone idle to use the handbrake (which is also safer in the event of a shunt)?

This is one of my pet hates but also people with their front fog lights on, on a clear day! I can`t help myself, i`m afraid, but as long as there isn`t any one else on the road who would be affected, i give them a blast of full beam. Probably doesn`t make any difference because they are too dense to realise that they are pillocks.

Hi. god only knows, being in a position to assist drivers, and show them the error of there ways, i can only assume its a fashion statement (as advised), on many occasions a friendly warning can be administered but some decide this is unacceptable and a small financial incentive helps, but not often. these are being clamped down on but as you guys are more than aware its not a priority, albeit it should be! they should only be used on when there is seriously reduced visibility!. but we all rely on other road user courtesy..
discussion like this help highlight this plight.

Cos, mate, there are an lot of Idiots out there with no regard for anything behind them.Having spent 40 years LGV driving I have come to the conclusion that these days A lot of people are "not bovvered " and we have just got to get on with it. I live in France, and its marginally better here, where its nice NOT to have any kiddy run traffic holdups or the usual morning queues .Keep on trucking!

My brother drives with his fog lights on even in the dark, like middle of the night 12am - 6am when it gets brighter, when he sees other vehicles he turns them off and uses the normal headlights.
But when I have been with him in the car - Some lorry drivers don't turn off theirs either !
Plus cars need to be seen more as they are obviously smaller and not as easy to see as lorries !
Some drivers are pretty arrogant when it comes to turning off the fog lights, I agree.
