What different is a Zippo from other oil lighter? Answer: NO different, EXCEPT the wick! Zippo wick made of asbestos and metal wires, whereas other may be just cotton. Both will light up with any FLAMMABLE liquid gas like white Gas, Gasoline or Methanol with a spark. Note where COMBUSTIBLE liquid like Kerosene, Diesel, BBQ fluid or Lamp oil NEED a flame or fire to light up! Filling Zippo with gasoline WILL NOT explodell!

People have been using gasoline in lighters for decades. Naptha ( lighter fluid ) and gasoline are very similar. The main reason not to use gasoline is that it evaporates a little more slowly than naptha and may be harder to light when very cold . Also gasoline unti 1977 contained lead which in such small amount probably never hurt anyone as much as smoking is probably not something you want to inhale when lighting a cig.
Obviously some of the answers came from people who don't know that we had audio recorings on disk before CD's. They were called records. Or that we had wonderfull wristwatches that did not need batteries. As well as lighters before BIC.

Zippo Gas

Something wrong here. I used a zippo when I was in the service. Of course that was a long long time ago. But our zippo's didn't run on butane. They ran on lighter fluid. Liquid stuff. Or gasoline when lighter fluid wasn't handy. I haven't had one for 40 years so maybe I am wrong here. But the old lighter fluid zippos ran great on gasoline. And if you over filled them you got a big red sore spot on your leg. We would fill them and then give them a shake to get rid of any excess fluid or gasoline. Do the new ones run on butane? I'd like to know. That sounds un-American to me.

I seen someone use gasoline...no explosion. It smelled really bad because gasoline is exactly that....and it stinks. Lighter fluid is naptha and more finely refined and cleaner burning.

Actually naptha is higher octane than gasoline and has a far greater explosion hazard. So, gasoline in a zippo is kind of a waste of time.

Why in the world are you asking this question? No do not use gasoline. Go buy some fluid or a cheap bic lighter for now. Good grief..

To make it really work, light the gasoline on fire first with the zippo then put it in the zippo.

I've been browsing more than four hours today seeking the answers to the same question, but I haven't found any interesting debate like this. it's pretty worth enough for me.
