Now he has left and I am behind in rent. I have a dispossess. I am on a fixed income and cannot afford the rent here but have no place to go. My 18year old grandson is also living here and is trying to find a job. Where can I get help. Can they make me leave?

Yes they can. Unfortunately at this point, they will probably be filing an eviction on your household, which will affect you trying to get an apartment anywhere else. You can try contacting different churches like the salvation army or catholic family charities and they may be able to offer you some type of assistance. You can also contact your local division of family and children services office and they may be able to give you some suggestions on who to call.

Call the landlord and explain the situation, and see if they can work with you and come up with some type of payment arrangement. Being honest and upfront always helps!

If he is the name solely on the lease, they will go after him for any back monies owed, but if your name is on the lease as well, they will come after both of you for any outstanding amounts owed.
They can and will make you leave, I am sorry to say. Are you currently under any eviction proceedings? If you continue to reside there and do not pay money, they will set all of your belongings outside eventually.
The best advice I can give you is to quickly secure another roof over your head (part of your dilemma, I know, but you do not have much of a choice) and turn in keys to where you are at, giving them possession. If your brother-in-law is the sole lease holder, they will go after him in collections.

Good luck in finding a cheaper place to live. Yes, they can make you leave if you can't pay the rent.
