I want to share the network with a mate, but don't want anyone else to see it. Is there a way that i can make the network hidden and then on his laptop which is running vista, type in the settings of my router so that only his laptop can find it?

Many thanks

You can do this by disabling SSID broadcasting. You may have to look up specifc instructions for your router.

Short answer. Nope.
Extended Answer: While it is possible to go and turn off your SSID broadcast to keep the casual loser from looking in your direction for an internet connection, It doesn't stop the wireless cards who are using the connection from responding and thusly broadcasting the SSID of your Wireless LAN. Have you thought of using something like a EoP (Ethernet over Power line) setup so there's no SSID broadcast to cloak / deal with ?

No not the way you are asking. Best thing to do is set up a WEP key and share it with him.

There is a way to get onto wireless networks anonymously but you have to do it with hack tools like Cain and Able. This is not what you are looking for though.

Yes. You need to go into the router and disable SSID broadcasting. That way they can't see your network.
