Well, you can't "format" it unless it's a re-writeable CD ( a CD-RW)
Whatever program you use to burn CDs with should have the option of erasing it. Windows also has an option on the left side of the window (when you "explore" the cd drive that the cd is in) to erase the disc.

Hi,
You could format an cd with a filesystem so you can access it like a drive and put file on it as you would do on a normal drive but,
if you only want to make a backup of the software there is no need to format the cd.
You could make a data cd, on which you can put your data that you want to save.
So, you have 2 options
1) format your cd, when done put your data on it
or
2) create a data cd, by putting your data to the cd and burn it as a data cd
-R.

Use your CD burner. I don't think disks require formatting unless you are using a RW CD. Let me know if I can help further.
