My High School is doing "the boyfriend" this fall and I was just wondering how stupid the play is. My friend's cousin's school put on the play a few years ago and said it was pointless but I was just wondering what people generally thought. Honestly I'd never heard of it before and the music for it sounds bizzar.

If the musical is stupid i'll be extemely upset. Past plays our school has done was beauty and the beast, Oklahoma, Le Mis, and everyone thought we would do footloose this year.. but I guess not. Thanks for the imput =)

I liked being in this show when I was in high school. I did it with a company near my school not at the school. Its a fun show light and fluffy. The lead girl is Polly Browne-she's the rich girl who just can't find love. Maisie is the school flirt. Both have their respective boyfriends. There is a large girl chorus and two "parent" roles. I think its an excellent choice for a high school because it really has a lot of great parts for girls-something high school drama departments have plenty of. If you want to do Footloose you had better start fund-raising because the royalties on that are huge right now.

I did this play my sophomore year of high school. The plot is pretty thin. Like most musicals from that time period, the plot is just a way to get to the next song. But it's cute and it's fun. I don't know a lot about singing (I had a dancing part, no singing), but the songs seemed fun to do. All in all, it's not so much a serious play. But it was very fun to be in.

I was stage manager for a production of this play. Yeah, it's fluffy and meaningless, but it's fun nonetheless. It seems a bit odd for the main musical for a school, especially given your previous offerings. I would think it would be more approriate as a second show for the drama department. The whole show can be done with a cast of about 15 people.
