The master himself: H.P. Lovecraft!
THE LURKING FEAR
AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS
PICKMAN'S MODEL
HERBERT WEST: REANIMATOR
THE THING ON THE DOORSTEP
THE HORROR AT REDHOOK
These are some of the scariest stories ever written and will "creep-you-out-of-your-skin"! For a better effect, read at night alone in an alley.
P.S. Stephen King stories really really suck.

H.P. Lovecraft (beware, his stories are wordy), Shirley Jackson, Richard Matheson... Look up a book called "The 13 Best Horror Stories of All Time" and use your imagination as you read. Forget modern technology and read something really scary, something that invokes horror from the most mundane things...
Enjoy!

Old Stephen King (Carrie, Salem's Lot, The Shining, Christine, Cujo, The Stand, etc.),
Peter Straub - co-wrote The Talisman with Stephen King
These are two of my favourite horror authors.

Stephen King's The Shining, Night Shift, and Misery.
Everyone I know that's read the Shining says that it's the scariest book they know of, and this short story from Night Shift called "The Boogeyman" made me stare at my closet every night before I went to sleep for a week.

I read Koontz and King and Patterson (Patterson is graphic enough to be on the "horror" list in my mind). I quit reading Saul because his villains are all children, and I find that this is not to my liking.

Depending on age, RL Stine's Goosebumps series, Steven King, or the Cirque Du Freak series.

If you like vampires, try Anne Rice for a traditional type of vampire. For more gruesome bloodsuckers, you HAVE to read the necroscope series by Brian Lumley!
