My car has a dummy light to remind me to change my oil. The manual says it detects when the oil is dirty and needs to be changed and turns on the light.

Up until recently, my light would only come on every 5,000-7,000 miles. But for my last 2 oil changes, it has come on before 3,000. The first time I thought it was a fluke, but the second time has me worried.

Could it just be the dirty oil sensor that is malfunctioning? Or could my oil be getting dirty faster? Should I disable the light and ignore it and just change my oil as often as my oil says to?

Your oil may be getting dirtier faster if you do a lot of stop and go driving and in adverse conditions like extreme heat and/or cold. Since you are smart you already know that unless you are doing this heavy duty type of driving I mentioned before you don't need an oil change but every 5-7K miles. If you look in your owners manual you can find the fuse that controls this light and remove it & then just pay attention to your mileage. I did this and make sure I change my oil every 5,000 miles and my car is fine.

Depending on your driving habits, you should change your oil about every 3 to 5000 miles, 3000, if you do a lot of stop and go driving, and 5000 if you are on the road, on long trips a lot. You should change it about every three months as well, even if you haven't put on the mileage. The sensor is probably letting you know that your oil is getting dirtier faster.

There is no such thing as a "dirty oil sensor." Some cars (such as my Chevy HHR) calculate how long the oil will last based on how far you've driven, the conditions, temperatures, etc., and then it turns on the change oil light based on the forumla. It is entirely probably your car has a similar program that calculates when to change the oil based on those conditions.

I'd suggest you change your oil.

It should come on right befor 3000 miles. You should have your oil changed every 3000 miles or 3 months whichever comes first. If your vehicle was waiting till 5000-7000 miles, there was something wrong then.
