Interesting question.
I'm purely guessing here: tens of trillions?
Since you don't seem to have people with the relevant expertice to give a ballpark estimate, I have 2 suggestions as to where you might get quality answers.
www.answers.com
is a site where you can post questions on any topic.
This isn't a geology question, BTW, but biology: zoology: entymology (insects).
Categorizing it correctly might help.
You could also go to a science web site:
www.newscientist.com
They have a feature called Last Word, where poeple ask questions, and scientists answer. You could submit it there.
Good luck! If you get a plausible answer, please let me know; you can send an email through my Profile page, or on my 360 blog (if you're on 360 yourself).

I would say so many nobody can even give a rough estimate. Ants outnumber humans by A LOT, too. I don't think there's any way to know the answer to your question.....
Good luck, anyways. :)
