Well I been there and done that and whilst I might be mentally scarred for life it wasn't because of pursuing the spirit within.
If the spirit is calling you sooner or later you will respond. They do say many are called but few are chosen and when you are chosen you won't live your life without it.
It was and is for me a wonderful experience, not to contact dead people but the spiritual aspect of the unseen and the huge love one experiences when in close contact with the energy - it can be addictive.
I do not now attend a spiritualist church nor do I mix with mediums but I do still feel the spiritual within, without and all around and in everything.
If you are afraid of anything you must tell the energy or communicator what you do not like or wish not to experience. Tell them what you find acceptable.
Better if you go for proper training through a healing circle I would recommend originally as I do feel first contact here is very protective, gentle and enjoyable.
One must be quite pure in mind to deal with this sort of thing. Do not do drugs or drink excessively and be involved with this - else you may well come a cropper and have a very unsavoury experience.
Never attempt anything psychic or any healing, or mediumistic when under the influence of any drugs or alcohol, it is a big no no.
Not wishing to scare you off but you will also need to be of strong character as any pursuit of the divine seems to carry with it attempts by the negative energy to sway you in that direction, it is similar to the lords test of 30 days and 30 nights, but it is nothing you will not be able to handle.
It is a great opportunity to experience true unconditional love, like you may have never experienced before and an experience you will never forget nor ever be able to live without ever again.
God Bless - May the light shine on within you.

Spiritualism and Mediumship is something that's rather easy to acheive. Don't be scared away from it by idiotic mystics who claim you can be possessed by demons while using a Ouija Board.
I've heard it say that to become a Medium, you must first become a healer, and that's how I got started; I found a lot of information on energy working, and began practising a healing technique called Reiki. As I did this, I started training my eyes to see auras, which practise can make your eyes adept at seeing spirits, and also open up your spirit even further.
The most difficult part of training to be a Medium is learning to open the Third Eye, a dormant gland, in front of the hypothalamus, which sits under the brain.
Good Luck, and if you're really serious about becoming a Medium, just do some research on Reiki, Seeing Auras and Opening The Third Eye, and you're bound to have results.
And don't worry, there's nothing traumatic about it.

Try contacting the Spiritualist Association of Great Britain. You don't need to be psychic they have a website. They organise talks, workshops and events. They can also put you in contact with local societies etc.

If you go to a reputable medium you will be quite safe, the only time you can damage yourself and whoever you do it with is the ouija board, using this can be very dangerous and I wouldn't recomend it to anybody.
Try looking in your yellow pages for your nearest spiritual church and go and visit them. I wish you luck in trying to contact your gran, and if you go about it the right way, i'm sure you will be successfull. I myself believe and have always believed in life after death, and your passed loved ones are there to guide you even though you may not realise at the time.

Well, if you're not open to such things it can be not such a good experience I supposed...but it has been my experience the one who tends to get mentally scarred for life ARE the Mediums.
We got to put up with a lot of crap...most people have NO idea what we go through.
Odds are likely YOU'LL be fine.

No, it is not traumatic nor can it scar you. You were born with this ability and you should awaken it and pursue it. It does sometimes have the ability to leave you drained of energy, but properly learning to use this ability will help you to spiritually energize yourself so the effects are less demanding.
Research it. Read about it. Visit Witchvox.com and find a local medium that can help you with this.
Good luck!

Depending on your religious orientation the following may seem offensive, so please, don't take what I'm about to say personally.
Biblicaly speaking you should stay away from spiritism and spirit mediums. (Leviticus 19:31) I mean have you ever wondered where their powers, or abilities to speak to the dead come from?
The bible says that dust we are and to dust we will return,(Gen 3:19) and that man IS a soul, not man HAS a soul. (Gen2:7)
Therefore, when we die, that's it, we cease to exist, nothing lives on so there is no one to talk to when they are gone. In the bible it is referred to as being asleep in death, (Acts 7:60)it also says that the dead are conscious of nothing. (Ecc9:5,6)
Therefore, spirit mediums are being lied to by evil spirits posing as our dead loved ones. They can make themselves sound like and even look like the ones we've lost, also, they know details of our lives because, well, let's face it, the demons have been around longer than we have!
So if you are asking if you should do this, I would say no, I have a friend who did and she regrets it. But, the choice is yours.
Hope that helps!

Zimia, as spiritualists are happy according to you, and some of them must be mediums, does this mean they are a happy medium

No, that's not true. Some of the happiest, centered, balanced people are Spiritualists. I'm not one of them though hee hee.
Seriously though, it's a wonderful path for many people. I would do some reading about it and also talk to people who are on this path.
Look in the R&S forum for Pangel - she has to change names oftenish but she's almost always around. She would be a good person to talk to.
