I don't think ENTITLED is the right word...I hate that word.
DESERVES - yes.
If a person works hard and earns his own money than he deserves to be able to purchase food and shelter with his earnings.

He's entitled to compensation commensurate with the market value of his services.
He also has the FREEDOM to better himself and make more money. Especially if he has avoided many of the pitfalls of modern society - dropping out, taking drugs, fathering children out of wedlock, etc.
If he can't make it in America, he won't be able to make it anywhere.

If he is 'pulling his own weight' then, by definition, he is earing enough to have those things. If he choses not to acquire them, though, that's his own business.
