Yes, to get alimony you have to have been married and are currently divorced. You don't have to be a woman to get alimony. My uncle could have filed for alimony against his first ex-wife because she made more money than him. My father could have filed for alimony when my mother divorced him, but foolishly didn't. I believe K-Fed filed for alimony against Britney Spears, although I'm not sure he got it or not. My guess is more men don't apply due to their macho sense of pride.

Alimony is about living your life at the level you are used to. Some women have sacrificed their careers and education to financial support their husbands through medical school or law school. Without having their wife working to support them, these guys probably wouldn't have the high-paying careers they currently have.

There is also palimony, which means you had lived together as a couple for some period, but are no longer living together.
It's the same concept, but doesn't require that the couple was married at some point.

It really depends on the situation. Alimony is put into place so male or female can get themselves back to their financial status when they were married. The person gets accustomed to certain ways of living by those means and divorce normally takes those things away. It is only temporary, remember that.

If it was decided that one of you doesn't hold a job but raises the kids and 10 years go by and you split, the non working partner should just have to deal with working at Walmart?

Comeon. It isn't always that easy. And usually women are asked to stay home.

alimony doesn't exist in some states -- and if the man makes a considerable amount more than the wife per year, sometimes they are ordered to pay alimony (especially after a long-term marriage).

i agree, the marriage might be over... and it isn't fair for the average man to have to pay alimony.

depending upon the circumstances, sometimes a judge won't require the man to pay alimony (if his wife makes a good living, or if she cheated during the marriage).

it works both ways.
take care

If the couple chooses for a woman to quit her job and stay home with the kids there should be something. He helped make that decision.

My sister filed for divorce and ended up having to pay alimony. Her husband was unemployed at the time and was awarded around $460.00 a month. She cried the blues so badly that her ex husband ended up paying his own alimony just so she wouldn't get in trouble. Women!!!

Not all women do get alimony and when they do get alimony it is only for a limited time, until they can secure employment and support themselves. Where have you been the past 30 years?

cos the law says so....

sad to say the current legal system doesn't catch up with the way our society evolve. in the past, woman work as homemaker, now, high flyer professionals.... law still the same, protect the deemed to be the weak one in the past....

agree to you. perhaps we have to wait for a law maker who is also facing the same in the divorce to propose a change....

oh boy, you do if you didnt let her go out, work and make $$. If she was staying at home, she missed out on Social Secuity (like itll still be around, i know) but she had no opportunity to plug $$ into a 401k or anything.

you have to compensate some of that, if the situation calls for it.

Then I suggest you be careful in picking your partner; someone who shares your values would be a good place to start. It's not terribly difficult...

And, FYI, some men get alimony, too.
