Yes no doubt. The ancient Vedas explain that for every action their is a reaction. We are always playing catchup with this. A child is born deaf or blind or sick or healthy or in a poor or wealthy family, only due to karma (reactions from ones previous actions) So they get the results of their past lives in this life. (Good or bad mostly a combination of both) What ever ones consciousness is at the time of death, one is sure to attain in thir next life. So if one has material desires and has not done a purrification process to attone for their sins they will have to come back in thier next life to the material world. (This world has three major aspect the material Heavens, Hell and Earth. No one goes to any of these realms eternally, as so many Christians think. That is a misunderstanding of their book because the book was changed by King Constantine to control the citizens. If one has done extremely good karma they go to one of the material heavenly planets if they have done extememly bad then to the hellish realm and for a combo deal they go to earth planet. It is easiest to transcend all material realms from the earth planet. If one takes up the process of self realization throuth Bhakti Yoga and chanting the Maha Mantra (the great mantra for deliverance from all suffering and illusion) they can at the end of life transcend all material desires, attachments and illusion and return to the eternal, blissful spiritual kingdom where their is no more repeated birth, death, old age or disease. If you find the answer to the question of what you are then this too will be answered. If you are a separate self entity known as a 'soul' created by another separate self entity known as 'God' then in your belief system this 'God' will either punish or reward you based on your merits. If you are not separate from the whole of everything then nothing else is and nothing is going to happen other than the end of your collected memory.

Oblivion is the self willing the extinction of the self, so in other words oblivion isn't a natural essence of reality, it is created by the self. So as long as you don't create oblivion for yourself, you'll be fine.
