I am excited about this deal. As is always said, pitching and defense most often win championships. In Gagne, you get a great pitcher, who, despite health concerns, makes this bullpen even better then what it already was. It also gives them better options. It means that while Gagne will serve as the top set up man for Papelbon, he can fill in from time to time as the closer, giving Papelbon a much needed rest. Remember, part of the problem last year was his arm got tired late in the season from overuse. Also, since Pap has some experience as a starter, he can possibly fill in when any of the starters get injured or need some time off for any reason, making Gagne the closer for that time. The only disappointing thing is they didn't add an extra bat such as Jermaine Dye, which was needed and would've been very helpfull, since the offence seems to be erratic at times.

I think they're putting Papelbon as a starter put Gagne as their closer and if Gagne gets hurt Papelbon will go back to CL and get another starter.

Gagne is now a setup man.
I like the trade..Gabbard looked good...but I sort of think its a fluke :l I wanted to keep Murphy to but its worth it.
Anyway Gagne is now the Sox setuo man along with Okajima...and if not that he's a second closer.
Best bullpen in baseball just got better!

My guess is he will be used in the 8th as a setup guy. he will be 2nd bananna to Papelbon. I don't see him staying beyond this season unless the Sox decide to make Papelbon as a starter like they where planning all along.

They stole Gagne and have an excellent option should something happen to Papelbon.

Bad move in my opinion...I wouldn't have let Gabbard go but I guess that's why I am sitting in front of a computer and not making $3 million as the Red Sox GM
