In my opinion.. one that doesn't break as soon as you open it.
Well we have a variety...
1. Budget Laptops-
Great for people who are on a budget of less than $600 and just want a laptop to use as an internet surfer, chatroom, basic music and video player, email, and etc etc. Overall the simple things that pcs do. But performance and battery life and such are going to be pretty mediocre.
2. Ultra Portable-
These are super small or lightweight and slim laptops. They are best for those who need a laptop for the uses of a budget laptop. But have the money to pay for the lower weight, sexier styles, and smaller size. These laptops have a decent battery life and processor. Heck the top of the line ones even have good graphics cards for gaming. The battery life is also generally increased on these ultra portable laptops.
3. Media Tank-
The name says it all. This laptop is for those who want the best performance they can get out of a laptop with their budget. They don't care about battery life, weight, design, and size. As long as they can get the most performance out of the price they pay. They're good.
4. God-like
I'm talking about things like the massive Dell that weighs 15lbs and looks like a suitcase that swallowed a gaming pc and 20inch monitor. These laptops cost $2500 and above and are for the hardcore performance enthusiasts with the pocket to afford such things. These are best for minimal portability and desktop replacement.
5. Average joe laptop-
Then we come to average laptops.. Ones that look okay.. have a price of around 1 grand and has a average performance in everything. They are generally 15 inchs diagonally and are laptops that are just good all around devices. These are good for the common people who just love to do a bit of everything with their laptop. A bit of gaming.. movie making.. music downloading and surfing.
6. Business Class
These laptops are unbelievable.. They're pretty much the ultraportable class but generally aren't good for gaming and are just centered around work efficiency on word or powerpoint. I seriously hate them for the high prices and mediocre performance but hey.. it's business and business doesn't care about money.
Just my take on computers.

if it has to be a laptop, Toshiba are a quality make but be warned laptops eat batteries every three years at £100 a set that has to be accounted for
they cannot be upgraded so after 3 years its probably ready for the dustbin,
save your money and get a stonking great powerful desktop far more powerful for the same cash and upgradeable

Toshiba makes the best laptops. I would highly recommend a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092. I have one, and I love it.

If you're talking about hardware, then a quad-core with over 2 gigs of RAM, a high end sound and video card... just everything with insanely high stats.
