Internet Explorer:
Advantages:
1. Comes with Windows.
2. May be slightly faster with initial loading, because it is integrated into Windows. This advantage has been pretty much eliminated with IE7
Disadvantages:
1. May be slightly less secure than other browsers. It uses ActiveX controls, which are notoriously unsafe, and allow for the easy spread of spyware. IE7 improves security a lot, though.
2. Does not fully support some web standards. IE7 has improved this somewhat.
3. It originally encouraged lazy coding on some sites, and thus some sites could only be accessed from Internet Explorer.
Firefox:
Advantages:
1. Cross-platform. Available for Windows, Mac, Linux, BSD, etc..
2. Safer than Internet Explorer with regards to spyware, as it does not use ActiveX controls. It still has some security flaws, though.
3. Supports more web standards than IE. It does not currently pass the Acid2 test, but Firefox 3 will.
4. Supports more plug-ins than Internet Explorer.
5. Provides for tabbed browsing. Internet Explorer before IE7 did not.
6. Easily themeable.
Disadvantages:
1. Is slightly slower in loading up than IE. Its speed is comparable to IE7, though. Speed can be improved slightly through the "Firefox Preloader, a program that loads parts of Firefox when Windows starts.
2. Not all sites are compatible with it, though these sites are becoming fewer and farther between.
3. Slightly different layout, that may be difficult at first to learn for someone who is used to IE.

well, IE is total crap with one exception, I can go to websites with bg music and hear it on IE but not on firefox..even my own sites, I have tried all kinds of coding, and still get a puzzle piece that requires endless download of an apple product...so, to surf the places with music or to work on mine and make sure music comes up, I have to use IE..its annoying. other than that, firefox is T-riff.

IE is like having unprotected sex with a crack prostitute. Not really that much fun and bound to get you an infection.
Firefox is quite the opposite and is full of features that you actually wanna use rather than crappy ones put there to make microsoft money.
