I've invited some vendors to my company for all-day meetings. We're having lunch catered just because of the time factor. The problem is, the caterer gives us a 20 minute window of when he'll have everything set up so we don't always get to leave our meetings right when the food arrives. We've had a really bad problem with random people walking up to the food & helping themselves. I'm not talking about 1 or 2 inconsiderate people, but 20! We're only buying enough food for the 36 people attending our meetings. How do I stop these horrible people? I sent out a note inviting them to the left-overs at 12:30 so they'd know exactly when it was alright to eat what's left. By 11:30, they're starting to buzz around the cafeteria like vultures, just waiting to eat. It disgusts me! I put up a note basically telling them not to touch the food until the sign is taken down. I have to stand by the food, sometimes 30 minutes, just to make sure they don't touch it. How do I stop them?

My guests had to BUY their own soda because the greedy fools I work with drank it all. There were no plates, napkins or silverware left because that many people felt entitled to just take what was out there. We're talking 25% of the people on my floor were so selfish. How do I make them see what an embarassment they've created?

Is there someone in management who'd be willing to send an email to the greedy pigs, advising them not to gather and stalk the food, and help you enforce the ban? Just something simple like, "On Tuesday, Marcie has organized a lunch for the people from XYZ, who are coming for a meeting. Pls refrain from gathering in or near the lunchroom between 1 and 3, and under no circumstance is anyone to touch the food until Marcie has indicated her lunch is over." If a VP or Manager issues this mandate, it gives the msg some clout. Good luck.

The situation that you cited clearly shows a lack of control by you and respect by them. Having said that your boss has some liability with this issue. Explain to your superior about the problem and be prepared to offer an alternative or two to combat the intruders. Your vendors and guest were treated rudely and the people responsible must be held accountable. If your protests to their actions go are not acted on by your boss you might want to consider the importance of your meeting and even the importance of your position in the firm.

I would send out a corparate e-mail denouncing their behavior and let them know that if it happens again, they will be all written up. That really is disgusting.
