Adu is definitely among the best, if not the best young American soccer player. As far as comparisons to other U-20s out there he's got a lot to prove because he's been bored out of his mind playing in a league he didn't want to play in while the Aaron Lennons and Theo Walcotts have been playing in the EPL.
I think once he gets comfortable at Benfica, Adu will blossom into a splendid technical player and be among the best young players out there. Of course he can still go in the tank, but I really think this move is going to help him. He's been bored and disinterested in the MLS and it shows in his play.

Compared to european, south american and even asian (korea, Japan) players, Adu is pretty much an average player. He doesn't have the skill, flair or vision good players his age have. C. Ronaldo, Quresma and Fabregas are all examples of young players that have great skill. Adu is only famous and people thinking he's good because of all the hype surrounding him . Plus he played and trained in the MLS and the league is at best 3rd tier football in Europe. He's never gonna be a great player, mediocre at best. We'll see how good he is once he plays a few games for Benfica.

definitely, all u have to do is watch the FIFA U-20 world cup in Canada. He is always at the heart of the best moves undertaken by the Americans. All he needs is a little polishing and a good coach, because there are no world class coaches in the USA. He is prodigy, has a good left foot and he's not bad at taking players on a one-on-one.Has a good shot, dribbles well and does not run so bad. What else do you need in a young player. He is the first and only player to score a hat-trick in both the U-17 and U-20.Watch out for him in the nearest future.

I don't think he lived up to the hype about him when he joined MLS. He didn't really get a lot of playing time. Compared to players like Messi, Fabregas, Walcott, Robinho, Rooney, C Ronaldo, and others, he has not demosntrated his ability and fulfilled his potential the way these other players have already demonstrated their ability.
Some experts say he should have joined a European club instead of MLS. Anyway, he did really well in the U-20 WC. Now that he has a chance to play in Europe, he needs to get better really quickly so he can rank among the young players in Europe.

He's a little above middle of the pack. He's still young so he can mos def improve and move up into the all star class but there are probably 1345 brazilian 13 year olds that you can say the same thing about so until he does hes just better than average.

Whoever is into gambling should not bet against Adu's new team too often if the coaching staff decides to actually play him. Hopefully, unlike in MLS, Adu will not rot on the bench. Lol so what if it's EUROPE? remember its in portugal -.- ... not england or spain or even italy.

In terms of the USA.....He is a great young talent....with a lot of potential.
But if you compare him to other players around the world....Like someone said here....he is about Average at the moment.
There are players around his age who are already playing at the top level in Europe.

In the US under, lets say 21, yeah, he's the best. In comparison with the rest of the world, he might be a little further down the list cause you have guys like Messi and Rooney.

Down the list a ways - he has talent, but so do many other players his age. He will need to step up his game in Portugal or he will always be looked at as the hype or the potential.
