Best place to live in the summer--temps around 85F, not too much wind or rain, and some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country (not to mention that it doesn't really get dark in summer--it's daytime at 10pm, so barbecues can go on forever.
In winter, its so cold that if you spill your coffee, it will freeze before it hits the ground. Despite that, they get less snow than many places in the lower 48, but whatever snow they get doesn't melt until spring.
If I were able to have two residences, one of them would be in Alaska.

It is a very nice place to live! You are obviously interested in sunshine though, and so I can't recommend moving here. Although we get more than out fair share during the summer (in terms of day length), in the winter it is so brief that some people actually have special lamps they spend time in front of daily to help avoid S.A.D. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seasonal_affective_disorder )
The winters are not that cold or snowy (many states have harsher winters than we do), but it is LONG, and DARK. It's not something that everybody can handle, psychologically. Most people take a vacation someplace sunny after Christmas, so getting to Hawaii is cheap and easy. There are a lot of wonderful, unique things about Alaska, too. I would suggest visiting during the summer, and then again in the winter before making any decisions. :) Good luck!

Well, it would be a big difference from where you probably are now. 95% sunny weather all year...that' great. I've not lived in Alaska but people that I know who lives there tell me it's wonderful. There is those three months each year that it's rather dark, but Alaska is beautiful. It will just take some adjusting on your part.

It depends on WHERE in Alaska you're going to live. Anchorage is beautiful and the temps are typical of Cleveland Ohio in the winter, just with a lot more snow. The Alasken Range and the Bay keep the temps tolerable, except for about 4 weeks in Jan., but you'll get more snow due to it being a little warmer. I was stationed there for 2 years and I can't wait to go back visit. It does take some getting used to with it being dark at 4pm in the winter and sunlight 21 hours a day in the summer.

I have been born and raised in Ketchikan, Alaska.
If you are looking for sunshine, Alaska would not be it. We are the rainiest place in the world. We get over 200 inches of rain a year! We are an island about 1.5 hour plane ride from Seattle.
During summer we get over a million tourists on cruiseships
Our fishing is amazing
Overall the thing that keeps people in Alaska is the people, you cannot find better people. Ketchikan has an amazing arts community. [theater, music, etc.]
If you have any questions let me know!

There is a saying, "See everything else, then see Alaska." I think they say that because once you see it... nothing compares.
