Dilation means that your cervix is opening (you must be dialted to a 10 to push the baby out). When you efface, it mean yor cervix is thinning out. You must be 100% effaced (as well as dilated to a 10) to push the baby out.
This might sound liek a weird example, but serious imagine it liek this...
Imagie it as a lifesaver. When you first put it in yor mouth, it represens your cervix with no dilation and no effacement. As you suck on it longer, the hole gets bigger...this is dilation. It also gets thinner around the edges...this is effacement. When that lifesaver is literally just abotu gone, it is considered "complete" whicb is dilated to a 10 and 100% effaced...ready to push.
Hope this helped.

Effacement is the process by which the cervix prepares for delivery. After the baby has engaged in the pelvis, it gradually drops closer to the cervix; the cervix gradually softens, shortens and becomes thinner. You may hear phrases like "ripens," or "cervical thinning" which refer to effacement.
In your final weeks of pregnancy your health care provider will routinely check for effacement, and as soon as you arrive at your birth location, you will be checked for effacement. If you are a first time mom, your cervix will usually efface before it dilates. If you are a second time mom, your cervix will usually dilate before effacement.

The closer you get to the end of your pregnancy, the more you will hear about "being effaced," "effacing," or "effacement."
What is effacement?
Effacement is the process by which the cervix prepares for delivery. After the baby has engaged in the pelvis, it gradually drops closer to the cervix; the cervix gradually softens, shortens and becomes thinner. You may hear phrases like "ripens," or "cervical thinning" which refer to effacement.
How is effacement measured?
Effacement is measured in percentages. For example, your health care provider may tell you that you are effaced 50%, which means you are half way to being completely effaced. When you are 100% effaced or completely effaced, your cervix is paper-thin and labor is right around the corner.
How will I know if and when I am effaced?
In your final weeks of pregnancy your health care provider will routinely check for effacement, and as soon as you arrive at your birth location, you will be checked for effacement. If you are a first time mom, your cervix will usually efface before it dilates. If you are a second time mom, your cervix will usually dilate before effacement.

Effaced means that the cervix (which is the end of the uterus, the opening, and a thick cone shaped muscle) is thinning out and becoming soft. It must do this before it can dilate, or open.

It's the "thinning out" of the cervix - when it opens and prepares for a baby to pass through it!
Good luck!
