Well as usual the Simpsons say it best

Kid: Hey, who left all this garbage on the steps of Congress?
Amendment: I'm not garbage,
I'm an amendment-to-be, yes an amendment-to-be,
And I'm hoping that they'll ratify me.

There's a lot of flag-burners,
Who have got too much freedom,
I want to make it legal
For policemen to beat'em.

'Cause there's limits to our liberties,
At least I hope and pray that there are,
'Cause those liberal freaks go too far.

Kid: But why can't we just make a law against flag-burning?
Amendment: Because that law would be unconstitutional.
But if we changed the Constitution...
Kid: Then we could make all sorts of crazy laws!
Amendment: Now you're catching on!
Kid: What if people say you're not good enough to be in the Constitution?

Amendment: Then I'll crush all opposition to me,
And I'll make Ted Kennedy pay.
If he fights back, I'll say that he's gay.

Congressman: Good news, Amendment! They ratified ya!
You're in the US Constitution!
Amendment: Oh yeah! Doors open boys!

Well, a better way is probably not the answer--not feasible to completely scrap the current system. But, it has been changed a lot since the original documents were penned. Amendments have been proposed and ratified regularly throughout our history. By way of suggestions, here a few I wouldn't mind having put on the table:

1) Term limits for public service--PERSONAL term limits. Basically, this mean you can serve your country as an elected official for a certain amount of time and then you're not eligible. Set it at say, 20 yrs. Whether you're a senator, a representative, a governor, the president, whatever. Why? Because it prevents people from making careers out of politics. Government becomes corrupt, stale and unrepresentative if it is composed of the same folks for years on end. Show me a senator like Robert Byrd and I'll show you a guy that should have been sittin' on his porch 20 years ago. Government in the US NEEDS turnover so that no one group of people becomes too influential or powerful. and so new ideas and approaches can be put forth, evaluated and tried.

2) No wars (or illegal invasions of sovereign states) without DIRECT taxation of the American people to pay for it. Talk about a check on the military industrial complex. Ask youself if you would have given 30% of your take home pay each month to pay for Iraq. I know my answer....

3) Get rid of the Federal Reserve. It's been eroding the dollar since it's inception. Central banks are a crime that should be eliminated. GWB didn't have to tax us to pay for his policies. He just winked at the Fed and floated more debt.

4) Strong third party. We need it badly. Not a bunch of freaks, just a moderate party to temper the extremes we are dealing with in DC. There are members of both Reps and Dems that don't belong to those parties. They vote like it, they talk like it, but they haven't declared it. They should and instantly create diversity in a political system that is desperate for it.

5) Internet Voting. Wait, let me say that again. Internet Voting.

6) Systematic shrinking of the federal government. It is too big, employs too many people doing too many unproductive things. Set goals for it and get there.

7) Enact legislation that makes it ILLEGAL for foreign governments and corporations to lobby any branch of US or state government. Elected officials cannot give those they represent their full attention if they are bending their ears toward China, Israel, France, India, Swiss drug companies, OPEC and everyone else in the world. If these organizations and countries want to make presentations about what should happen here in the US, fine, make them on TV or the internet for all of the taxpayers to evaluate. Information flow is fluid enough now and will be more so into the future for that to be a viable option. It will also keep all of us 'consumptive Americans' aka--people that spend money on goods and services--much better informed.

There are others, but I thought I'd chime in on a few...

Start by requiring the govt to obey its own laws. Until we do that, everything else is pointless.

Next, since the Constitution explicitly states that the federal govt is to be one of specific enumerated powers, require every law to state what Constitutional authority allows Congress to pass it.

Next, restore the 10th Amendment (states-rights) and put the "necessary and proper" clause back to meaning "NECESSARY and proper" (not "vaguely related in some way"). That goes a long way to eliminating about 80% of govt pork spending.

Change the way states implement the electoral college to be pro-rata by percentage vote to each candidate, not all or nothing across the state. That helps eliminate block voting.

Finally, eliminate political parties as a political force -- no elected official can be publicly affiliated with any party, or favor any party. Parties cannot be mentioned on any ballot. No primaries. Each candidate must stand on their own merits. That goes towards eliminating partisan gridlock.

That's about a generation's worth of work to fix. See you in 20 years for the next steps.

I think that the American gov is not perfect, but is a pretty good government, they are more good things than bad, but people will always see the bad things not the good ones

Based on human decency (or lack thereof), I believe we should go back to sticks and rocks. Let's see how many politicians say something retarded then (and if they do, let's see how many of them survive the night).

The Government has not oversight whatsoever. Congress is not doing its job, they are just bobble heads.
