Hi, I'm 5 1/2 weeks pregnant and have had abdominal cramps on and off for the last week. The problem is that last night I woke at 3 am with severe cramps in my back and abdomen. Unlike previous times when I just changed position and it went away it stayed for about half an hour and was radiating right around me, not really so much in the middle but the sides and back hurt. Is this normal? I've already had one miscarriage and I'm really worried. I'm seeing my doc tomorrow.
Has anyone else experienced this and is it normal?

it could be an ectopic prengnacy. that is when the baby is developing outside of your uterus. If they give you an ultrasound at the doctors tomorrow, it will prolly be too early to see anything. They might have you do levels. get blood work done and then get blood work done 2 or 3 days later to see if the HCG hormone at least doubled. that means its a normal pregnancy. With an ectopic pregnancy, you will have serve pain (although pain tolerance varies from person to person). You might also have lower back pain, and shoulder pain. You might also have some spotting or bleeding. I would def. bring the topic of an ectopic pregnancy up at your doctors appointment tomorrow.

um why am i getting negative ratings on this question. Everything I said was true. I just went through it and everything I wrote came from the doctor.

I had the same worry when I was about your stage as well. I woke thinking I was having a miscarriage because my back was killing me and I had centered cramps. Everything worked out though...don't get yourself all worked up like I did or it'll just make things worse.

I would put a call into your doctor today and let her know what you experienced last night. She will then decide if she wants to see you today or wait until your appointment tomorrow. You saying they were severe isnt Normal. And having a history of a miscarriage I wouldnt chance it. Your doctor would want to know these things. And if she decides to wait until tomorrow.. well then you will not have to worry all of today and tonight.

i've had 2 miscarriages before this pregnancy so i understand your concern. however, the cramps are completely normal. in the beginning of this (3rd) pregnancy, i experienced horrible cramps. i called the emergency room but they said not to worry unless there is bleeding associated with the cramps. they explained that the reason why you cramp is because your gestational sac is attaching itself & it does cause discomfort. it is also because your uterus is expanding now & will continue throughout the rest of your pregnancy. also, your ligaments are stretching too.

as hard as it is not to worry in fear of another miscarriage, please don't worry. however, if your cramping is accompanied with bleeding, then call your doctor immediately!!!

good luck :)

Could be just your uterus growing. I had cramps too around that time, along with a terrible backache the entire time. Do not stress yourself with worry, it makes them worse. But do make your OB aware.
